Your timing is perfect, but you do have a Saturday date in the summer ( highest demand ), so if you don't want to run into having your favorites booked, you probably will want to book with at least 12-15 months in advance.
I think it depends how high on your priority list a photographer is. To me, it was number 1. We lucked out and got an amazing deal because they are just starting out. We are paying $3000. They are coming with us on our cruise, and will be taking pictures the whole week.
If I was going to get married at home, the photographer I wanted would have been around $2500.
Oh my goodness, you bees are amazing! You all gave me such good advice and insight!
@bluespurrs: It's helpful to have some guides for choosing!
@ashleyjane: I think it's good for photography to be a priority
@MissAsB, @prettyflowers, @Fanatic888, @Ms. Min Pin,@IA Snowflake, @naangel: Thank you for sharing your experiences. It helps put the decision into perspective!
@june bride: Good advice. Thank you! (I bet your husband loved those photos!)
@JuneBride_26June2010: Sooo good to know about the rights to images. Those are the kinds of details I am worried I will mess up!
@artbee, @caszos: Thank you for sharing!
@aplusb: Rationalize away!
@JoJoBananas: Oh, thank you cards are such a good idea!
We're spending aprox. $2600 on photographer. This includes:
My budget was $3000, and I was so happy I was able to stay within that and get everything I wanted (we REALLY wanted the disk with permission to print the photos, and, for many photos, that was a $500 add on). We're not getting a lot of extra stuff (sure, I'd love my proofs in a book or a pretty box), or an album (which I do desperately want, but I can't justify that $1000+ price tag for a pro album at the moment).
@eyre, @cheerful, @pren79: Thank you for sharing those ranges!
@Miss Chapstick: I think photos are worth the splurge!
@ejs: I'm from Cincinnati, OH. A lot of packages I have seen are 3K to 4K and I was wondering if that was the norm!
@zippylef, @mermaid, @peyton, @farfrom, @gabrielle: Thanks for sharing. I want a lot of the features you all mentioned (e-session, all day coverage, etc) so that helps!
@Raindrops: You got an AMAZING deal! Wow! So lucky!
@Photography by Marirosa: Thanks for giving your "expert" opinion! And so good to remember to get the EDITED images on disks....how disappointing it would be if they were the originals!
@Sarah, @ marinara, @halloween, @twopeas: Thank you!!!
@Mitla: What great advice on budget. I think we may have to do the same—splurge here and scrimp there.
I think your location will have something to do with the price range of available photographers. We are going to spend I think $7,800 but our photographer is in very high demand all over the world and of course he only offers the best 'package' you can buy, it includes everthing imaginable. So basically we can't check things off to save money, it was all or nothing with him. But once I registered us on the knot, I was stalked by photographers, I think it's a tough time for them in general since there is a lot of competition and people are cutting back on wedding expenses.
@penga, @beav, @panda, @hhcheung, @dddubz: Thank you!
@eventhorizon and @Amanda B: I appreciate the advice from someone "in the business!" And Amanda, you are right -- we are booking in a very busy time! But since we're still 20 months out, we are hoping to find a photographer in the next three months or so. Hopefully that will secure us the photog. we want?
@MissyDoodle: I agree...it's very important to me too! That's amazing that yours is coming on your cruise. You'll have fantastic photos!
@Gilneas: Thank you for the detailed description of your photo package! That's good to know. And you're right...that $1000 is hard to swallow on top of all of the other expenses. I am sure it will all turn out lovely, though!
i am in NYC and getting married in Philly. My photog is $6500 including the photographer, her assistant, our album, 2 parents albums, 8 hours of shooting and we own our photos.
My only regret is because I am getting married in 2011 and in winter we should have pushed a little harder to get the price lowered. I just got really excited and love my photog.
@ModernDaisy: Oh wow! I haven't been bugged by too many photogs. from the Knot yet, but that is something to keep in mind! Thanks for your input!
@DVsMom: I think it you love your photog., that is all that really matters, because then I am sure you will love your pictures also! :)
Gem, since your wedding is so far off- I would highly suggest pushing the price down since people are cutting back on weddings, you have the upper hand and they love knowing they will have work so far in advance.
@Moderndaisy--I have a feeling I know who you photog is if he is a popular/sought after Philly based on- he may be the boyfriend of mine!
@DVsMom: Ooh, I never thought of that being a "bargaining chip" so to speak. Is there generally room to "negotiate" in photography pricing?
@Gemstone, I am pretty confident in saying I think so- I mean we did. I think the end price my mom got was less than the above by some and she got 2 additional albums thrown in (which can be expensive). It is worth trying, the worst they say is no, but even if its not money off the price- maybe its a second shooter, parent albums, or an engagement session or bridal session. We spoke to several photographers and all but 1 was willing to throw in stuff or lower the price. They are aware that people are just not spending as much on weddings and, again, knowing they will be bringing in money so far away means a lot to them.
at first i was all about spending thousands of dollars on photography, i mean it's the only thing you'll have left after the party's over right? my better half convinced me to keep it under $1000, this was our major compromise with eachother.
we ended up getting very lucky and booking a great philadelphia photographer for $600 for 5 hours of coverage and all images edited and on a disk with full print rights. print rights are important! if you do not have this than you will have to pay your photographer or their studio for every single picture you want to have printed out. that is an expensive mistake! good luck with whatever you choose.
We had a firm budget of $1500. A lot of photographers were WAY out of our price range [starting between $2500-$3000] but I found about 5 that fit our budget AND had beautiful pictures. Most of them quoted us at a higher rate, but when I told them that I really couldn't pay more than $1500 for 8 hours, all of them agreed to lower their price. One woman even added 2 extra hours, an engagement session and lowered her price by $200 to accommodate our budget!
Two days ago, we finally decided on a photographer. She is offering 8 hours, an engagement session, all the rights to the photos, edited images on a DVD, and then a DVD that she creates with music, chapters, etc. This will cost us $1350.
Good luck with your search! :)
$350- which is way way less then his usual rate because he is a friend. It may well end up being free as my sister has mentioned that he's thinking of gifting us the photography. Woot woot!
