I have a friend who has offered to do the wedding. Frankly she isn’t that good. But, I have another friend who is basically our local go to guy for fashion and band promos. He quoted me at $700 to do the wedding and reception with him and an assistant shooter.
Is that a good quote?
He did mention he usually wont do a wedding for under $1500, but since we have worked together before on sets (I’m usually the go to girl for band promotions), he’s willing to give me a discount since I have a small wedding.

That’s an extremely good quote. Everything I found for someone decent was between $1250 – $4000+, with most being in the $2200 range. This is in a mid-sized town in the midwest, not a major metro area.
I would be leery using a friend for photography, particularly one whose main focus isn’t weddings. I’d want to be able to really grill them on seeing past work, telling them expectations for the day, lists of photos, etc. Using friends as vendors worries me if you’re picky about something. If it is less important to you though and you’re okay with just “going with the flow” with whatever the do, it can be a great deal. Wedding photography can’t be re-created and requires more than just photography skill – it requires a lot of interpersonal skill to manage all the people it involves and time management.
Great price though, if you think he’ll do a great job and you can easily work with him -jump on it!

Fantastic price! We’re paying $1795 for our photography. As long as your trust their work, I say go for it!

Amazing price. It’s almost impossible to get a great photographer for under 2.5k around here.

Yep, it’s a good quote for 2 shooters for the wedding and reception!

Great price, just make sure to still get a contract, even though you’ve worked with him before.

A friend of mine is doing them for free, but the company she’s interning for has packages starting at about $2,500.

It depends on what you are getting and the quality of the work. Does this photographer have experience doing weddings and a portfolio of weddings they can show you so you can get an idea of what you will get from start to finish? Doing promo’s is much different than wedding photography.

Its only a good price if they can take good pictures. Its a terrible price if their photos suck.
Can you post a link to their site so people can give feedback?

@BooRadley: +1 FREE is even a terrible price if the pictures suck.

Fashion and band promos are NOTHING like weddings. Not even remotely close. There is a reason why full time wedding photographers charge what they do for weddings – not everyone who can use a camera is cut out for photographing weddings. Is it a good price? Well it’d be an insane price if this person was a good wedding photographer. Heck $1500 is an insane price if they are good wedding photographers.
