@Mrs. Meowerson:

Hi – LOVE my photographer; she’s in Ventura, and her name is Stephanie Saul. Take a look at website, that should tell you whether she’s for you.

ETA: just looked at site myself; oops. I think she raised her rates a bit, but you might want to check with her and see if she can do something to get within your budget. That’s if you like her photos.

@Mrs. Meowerson: I’ve heard of people who plan their wedding date around their fav vendor or venue. If you can change your date to one your favorite photog has open, you could try that?

Try looking into Brooke’s Institute of Photography (its a photography school in Santra Barbara), you may be able to find a talented student there who would be within your budget, maybe one that’s about to graduate. Just make sure you ask them if they’ve done weddings before. Just because they know technicalities does not mean they’re ready for a wedding.

@Mrs. Meowerson:  I hear ya!  I can only imagine how costly things are on the coast.  Here’s a couple suggestions…  1.  Bargain with the photographers!  Tell them that you are trying to decide between a couple photographers and cost is a factor!  Make them believe you really want them and they may cut you a deal.  We saved $300 that way!  2.  Consider getting a photographer out of the area/state.  It may be cheaper this way, even with airfare and hotel, etc.  Good Luck!!!

Oh gosh this puts dread in my heart. I really want good photography and the budget for our whole wedding is 3,000 :p I need to make friends with some photographers now so I can call in a favor next year 😉

Anyways, I wish you the best of luck finding someone awesome!

Just a crazy thought but you might look for a photog in the heartland and see if they want a free/working vacation. My friend did this and got an awesome photog for around your price.  She got two cds full of pics, with touchups, editing, etc.  She paid for him and his wife to fly out and stay in a reasonable hotel for three days.  She invited the wife to the reception of course but she went shopping instead.  The photog and his wife got two free days on the west coast for one day’s work.  It couldn’t hurt to try looking on Wedding Wire and see what you could negotiate.

@Mrs. Meowerson: google “2012 wedding photography giveaway”! there are a ton out there already. You could also look for photogs in surrounding states. The rates where you are are so high because . . . well, you live in California. Try neighboring states?
