Photograghy can be very expensive. My best advice is to shop around you can find great deals out there. Sometimes you can find great photograghers that are up and coming with great talent but need to build there portfolio. Just keep shoping but yeah that is a lot. But maybe not for your area.
Phototgraphy can be a lot. My best advice is to keep looking. I remember when I started looking I was getting freaked out because my budget was $3000, and I was expecting to be UNDER that, and everywhere was so much more! But I found a lot of photographers who worked under my ideal budget ($1500-2500), and my photography worked out to $2000 with some bartering.
Be up front with what you are looking for and your budget, and photographers may be able to accomodate you as well.
Price depends mainly on where you are located. Larger cities will charge more than smaller towns. Another option is to go through a local art school or community college's art dept and ask if there are any advanced photography students willing to document your wedding. They get experience for their portfolios in exchange since everyone has to start somewhere. But also keep in mind that photos are going to be your lasting memories after everything else is gone so alot of past brides say that is not an area to skimp on since you can't recreate the day if the photos turn out bad or mediocre.
Thanks for the advice, bees! The wedding is in Newport Oregon and so far the photographers I've contacted are the ones with the big websites who were easy to find. I'm going to start asking around about others, having a person who doesn't have an established business but takes nice pictures is fine with me. We're really low budget, so I'm almost tempted to ask my aunt to do it!
I'm paying a flat $2000 for the whole day, I think she cuts it off at 12 hours. It's a little bit more than some places I talked to, but she is giving us all of the proofs on a disk when it's all said and done and signing off so we can do what we want with them. We won't have to purchase a single picture from her at ridiculous prices so to me that was totally worth it!
Also, she isn't from one of the large companies that you can easily find. I know about her because she did my sister's senior pictures and we liked that we got all the proofs.
In Medford there is a whole range of prices from $1000 on up to $3500. That was still a little pricey for my teensy budget so I'm having a friend who just graduated from art school do it so she can build her portfolio. She is only charging me $250 and I get a disc with all the proofs.
Definitely do some research and comparisons, I found bridal shows really helped with this. I was able to check prices/promos as well as examples of work in one afternoon and location. My favourite photographer in the city was waaaay out of our budget (absolutely no more than $2000)...I attempted to see what kind of deal we could strike, but even his deals were too much for me :( Nonetheless I did end up getting a great photographer (engagment pics in three weeks!!!!), and I found her by just googling affordable photographers in our area...she came recommended on a wedding forum (wedding bells). I checked out her work on her website and the rest is pretty much history. Just be up front with what you can afford and with what you are looking for, I'm sure you'll find something affordable and fantastic :)
Newport isn't that far from my second home, Portland. (Actually, technically it's my first!)
Take a look at my website and feel free to send me a message if you have any questions!
www.aleksilepisto.com I can also provide you a private link to an entire wedding set I just shot for a client once they are approved, so you get an idea of the finished product.
I'm sure we can work within your budget :)
Well, I would put my photographer at about $2k+ plus I am getting engagement session (or bridal. I decided I wanted to torture the FH), wedding day coverage with a walk through the day before, full coverage on my wedding day, 2 framed and matted prints, a leather bound wedding album, and two leather bound parent albums. I think I got an awesome deal. And the photographer ain't bad either ;)
my photographer is a little under $1700, which is at the lower end of what i could find around here, and it doesn't include an album, i'm just getting the cd of images so i can make my own. but he's amazing and he will spend 10 hours. i'm also having a small wedding and don't think i need 10 hours (there's no dancing just dinner) but i figured oh well, it's our one day we might as well capture it all, and everything leading up to it.
That seems like a lot to me for only 5 hours. We're paying 1795 for two photographers and 8 hours. Definitely shop around.

I am wondering what is a normal price for photographers for a wedding. I am having a very small ceremony, about 25 people total and would like a photographer for about 3 - 5 hours to take pictures at the ceremony and reception. One quote I got was about 2,000 for 5 hours. That seems RIDICULOUS to me.
