What are some of the popular wedding photography trends that you see nowadays?
Any ones that you absolutely love or think are timeless?
Any trends you don't care for?
Provide example pictures if possible! :)
I dont care for some of the lighting finishes. I am not sure what they are called exactly- the ones that are often described as "whimsy or romantic", antiqueish, sepia tone can be nice in moderation. . They dont look bad, but I think they will look dated in 30 years.
I like true colors and black and white.
hmm...
Trend I love: "around the corner" rather than first look.
Trend I hate: spot color. (where usually the people are in black and White and one other thing... like the flowers are in color. so weird.
I love love love jumping pictures! I think they're so cute.
Can't stand the selective coloring where everything is in b&w except for one thing...like a bouquet or shoes or something.
@FutureMrsChaney: I feel like that one is already on its way out. I havent seen it too much recently - saw it way more when I first started planning my wedding.
@lefeymw: I know exactly what you are talking about! I have no clue what the name for that effect is... not exactly sepia, but it gives kind of an..... indie feel? (just IMO, I can't think of another way to describe the results)
Does anyone know the name of this effect?? I've always wondered!
haaate the jumping pics.. ddddddiieee! lol
love the spot color haha.
Rings on the shoes must die as well..
I really love the photojournalistic approach to wedding photography. I like when the pictures tell the story of your day... as opposed to.....

I will be so happy when jumping pics go out.
AND THE FREAKING MUSTACHES ON STICKS.
TOO MUCH PHOTOSHOP!
omg i see some photos that would have been great on their own... and then they have been touched up so much that the bride looks like a plastic barbie doll and the background looks like a cartoon. wtf?
@ccflowers: Don't like the selective coloring either!! I think it makes the photo look like something you'd have done at Sears!
I can't wait to see some of these disappear:
The 'select color' photo... or whatever it's called

The 'admire at my ring!' photo:

Photoshopped and/or perspective pictures that look like this:

I love pictures of the bride where he veil covers her face, but the picture is close up. It's so romatic looking :) My photog actually does this and has beautiful pictures, that's why I got her! Yay!
I hate pictures where they cut off the face of the bride & groom... it's really annoying IMO. I want to see your face not your body!
@FutureMrsChaney: I was totally going to say the jump photo... so over it! I also think the signing the picture mat as a guest book is starting to get replaced by other things.
This is all great advice since I shoot wedding photography on the side. How do you guys feel about vignettes? The darkening of borders around the image. It bit over done and tacky?

I hesitate to call very much of anything on here tacky because it tends to get people's hackles up, but I do think it's a trend that will eventually find its way out.
@KristenGotMarried: I hate the flowers on the train of the dress pictures with selective coloring. I just never get why people take that picture. I agree about the mustaches too. I did the jumping picture and loved it. I also did an up close veil kiss picture, but it was done really well, so it doesn't look cheesy at all. It's one of my favorite pictures.
@j-adore01: I personally don't care for it and would request that gorgeous picture without the effect... it detracts from the photo itself, in my opinion. But who knows if it's 'overdone', you know?
Has anyone else noticed that a lot of the popular wedding photography today has really muted colors? I'm sure there is a name for the effect that I just don't know of..... I'm not saying that this is a good or bad trend (just one that seems to be super popular right now):
Any photography buffs want to chime in? Is the effect from using a certain light source, processing, etc.?
Ok I dislike photos that are angled. I feel like this will go out of style and our kids will be saying, "why couldn't their photog hold the camera straight?!"
@j-adore01: I think you should just ask your clients up front what they like. My photographer really loves them, but I don't personally care for them so I made sure to tell him that. :)
@KristenGotMarried: all of those are truly horrible pictures.
I have to second the mustaches, I hate those so much.
I also hate the vintage edit pics:

sorry if it's huge...I hate when I see entire photographer's blogs and every picture is covered in this washed out yellowy cast. One or two is cool but do you really want your entire wedding album looking like it's 30 years old when it's brand new? I guess lots of people do. I hate!
@Seaside: Ahhhh "vintage edit" - the phrase I was searching for. Thanks!!
It's sooooo popular right now!
@meladoug, I'm not sure if this is what you mean, perhaps desaturating of colours in an image? I do that in editing sometimes depending on the feeling I'm trying to convey with the image.
@MrsNeutrino: What?? That's not how people normally stand next to each other during their wedding day? I like the photojournalist style too, but I'm afraid I'll just end up with a lot of pictures of me grabbing FI butt or something.
I hate the rings in sticky foods, like on cupcake icing or the cake. Ugh everytime I see one I just want to get jewelry polish out. But I'm ocd like that haha.
@Seaside, very true it is a bit overdone, although it is a very popular style right now. I guess as meladoug mentioned, you should consult your photographers first making sure the style of editing you prefer. But also if you see the majority of a photographers editing style is vintage then you should probably opt for a different photographer.
The Toyota jump and the mustaches. I started collecting wedding mustache pics on Pinterest just because there were so many of them.

I've noticed that some think wearing Chuck Taylors and Toms is unique and hip. It's fine if you want to wear them, but realize that they are a bit trendy.
I'm not sure this counts, because I hope it was never popular, but I was in a wedding where we took a picture with all the bridesmaids holding their bouquets around the brides face so you just saw her face popping out from all the flowers. It felt incredibly cheesy, and looked just as bad. I wish I could find a picture!
I don't like selective coloring, jump photos, vignetting, harsh flash, using perspective to make a funny picture, or cheesy poses.
I DO like vintage processing and moustaches. If that makes me a trend follower, well I admit to it lol.
@Jeannine @ Small Chic: I love that you collect moustache photos! But this is probably my favorite from your collection :P

- Selective color!!! that is the worst trend EVER!
- EXCESSIVE vignette! a subtle one i get but when it looks like your photo is in an oval frame that's wack.
- the "look at each other" pose or actually anything that's overly posed.
- i'm so over every bride thinking that she's a high fashion model during her wedding photo's. SMILE! that frowny serious look just makes you look like a b!tch.
- overuse of texture or colorized photo's. keep it to a minimum.. subtlety is KEY!!
i have more but i have to think of it :)
I hate all props. I think prop people might feel dumb in approximately 5 years. And they should!
