How much are people paying for photography? What proportion of the budget are you spending? I know that some people place differing amounts of importance on the photography, so please share why you are spending what you are spending! If your friends are taking photos, are you asking them to take formal portraits as well? It may be interesting to provide your location, for relativity...

I should add, now that I realize how personal of a question this is, that I ask because I am trying to price out a photographer, and I have noticed a DRASTIC difference between the city and where we are having the wedding - but in quality as well.

I'm paying $1600 for ours. We get two- the main photog and her assistant. Our price also includes a disc of all the sutiable pics (w/o a watermark) and a 40pg album. The photog is also touching up all the pictures.

The package we went with is $5900.  I think it is a ridiculous price.  It is the photographer my sister had for her wedding and my mom really wanted him again.  His prices have gone up by $1000 in three years.  Our package includes parent albums (which we are paying for rather than my parents).  And we get 2 photographers for 7 hours.

Don't get me wrong, his work is unbelievable, but we are spending way more than I think is appropriate.  I wanted something around $4,000.

I'm not responding to the poll, because my photography is free!

I am good friends with a couple who started their own photography business about a year ago.  Because we're friends, and because they've never shot a wedding before(e.g. no experience), they offered to do it as our wedding gift!

I would value their package at....$2000 at least?  It's going to be 10 hours of photography!

We are paying 2500 for two professional photographers (no assistant), unlimited hours on the wedding day, an engagement session with guestbook, and a disk of the hi-res images on our one year anniversary. This is definitely a high percentage of our $10,000 budget, but we value photographs that we will treasure forever more than flowers that will die a week later.

We paid $500 for ours which was a great discount from the $1200 package that it normally is. My friend, whose wife was a BM, recently started a photography business took our pictures. He took some great pics for what we paid and we got three discs of photos. He was with us the whole day and most of the reception. We live in Missouri and they travelled from Louisiana for our wedding but they now run their business out of Colorado Springs due to military move.

We're spending around $1200 ... about 1/10th of our budget (yikes!), but this photographer has been doing shoots for us since i was about 4.  He did my senior pictures and both of my brothers weddings, and we're happy to encourage a small business.

I think that a good guideline I've seen is about 10-12% of the reception budget on photography.  I really do think it's important to make it about this large of a fraction...it'll be your most tangible memory of the evening.  My mom still gets excited pulling out her wedding album after 36 years, so I know that it's a pretty important keepsake.  B/c we are having a multi-day (partially Indian) affair this doesn't exactly work for me, but it's actually not too far off either.

At $3400 (CAD), we spent nearly 18% of our budget on photography.  Photos were one of our top priorities, and after seeing our pros and loving them, we have absolutely no regrets concerning the amount we spent.

I feel very blessed becaues photography is the thing I will be willing to spend more money on then anything else.  That is all you have once the day is over and I LOVE pictures!!  Back to being blessed... We have a co-worker who does wedding photography and she has offered to do our wedding day and has said to me to tell her what my budget is and she will do whatever I want for as little as I may have.  I'm going to pay her as much as I am able, but I know that she will give me more then I would be able to pay for.

I answered the poll, though I don't feel comfortable saying what we paid here... I will say that it was more of our budget then catering, and I'm not regretting a single penny of it!  I just hope our decor lives up to her abilities, so that she has some good stuff to work with...
