A pianist isn’t cheesy, but the sound from a keyboard unless it’s super top of the line doesn’t sound the same as a real piano.  It’s okay but not quite the same as the real deal.  I’d consider a harpist or violinist if you aren’t averse to them.

Honesty, I think a keyboard will be fine. The idea of rolling a piano outside on the grass is too complicated to even fathom. I’ve seen outdoor weddings have music coming from a keyboard and it sounded good. You can have him meet you at your venue one day before the wedding (and before the rehearsal because the day before is too late to find a replacement should you not like it) and play a song on the keyboard outside where your wedding will be. That way you won’t have to wonder how things will look or sound because you’ll know.

I’m considering this as well for our outdoor ceremony and brunch reception! I just can’t quite figure out what to do for the ceremony though and am wondering if it would be better to just hire a string quartet!

My husband is a concert pianist (and has played background music at  his share of weddings Laughing  You should hear his version of “Thriller” made into a wedding song.  It’s here if you are interested haha)

It’s entirely possible to get great sound from a piano at an outdoor venue.  He says you just have to have a good sound system and a microphone – which most wedding venues will have.

Best of luck!

Yay!  I had a piano for background at my reception.  Loved it.  (that was reception 2, wedding one we had a string trio for the ceremony and cocktail).  My dad loves music so that was something my parents were keen to splurge on for me!
