OR.....you could add some simple snaps or hook and eyes.
yeah can you add like a bra type closure on the back? i think that's hook and eyes, right msmonicka?
I agree, the hoks would probably much easier to tke off and no damage to the dress.
I was also going to suggest the hook/eye closure... unless you want your wedding night to be super-special...
You: "Here husband, I give you these (wedding-themed) scissors! I am yours!"
Husband: "HOT DARN! *snip snip sni*... I hope that wasn't an important strap :/"
You: *fume*
Yeah, they make them in white! Or do like we did and buy the black ones, then use a little white-out, heehee.
Snaps are good, but hook and eyes will hold better with the wedding dress. Snaps aren't as durable.
They also make velcro type things you can sew in to help it lie flat.
yep crebre...right!! as a long time sewer...the thought of you being stitched into your dress terrifies me.
If you are having alterations done, ask your seamstress. From my experience, they are normally pretty good at figuring out these things.
We thought about the snaps and or hooks. The problem is (and both seamstresses have agreed) that there is not enough "flap" for the snap to reach over the zipper and onto the dress. Basically, the flap does not reach far enough over the zipper to put something like this on. This is what I am told, do you guys think there is a different option?
I have literally taken the dress to the seamstress in Jacksonville Davids Bridal store, and to the Tallahassee Davids Bridal store. Now, I don't know how quality the seamstresses are at Davids Bridal, but both have said the same thing to me.
@ Mrs Monicka and Crebre - How hard is it to take the zipper out and put in a corset back. The seamstress said it isn't terribly hard but it adds about 6 inches. Right now the dress fits perfectly so I would have to go a size or so down and then put in the corset. Am I getting into a huge risk by thinking of doing this? Also, the fabric of the bodice of the dress is like a satin with a lace overlay. I don't know how well you can see it here.

Can you post pics?
EDIT: That's absolutely beautiful. Can you post pics of the problem?
My mom has the pictures of the "problem" I can see if I can have her send them.
Here is a closer detail of the lace:
I'd totally just put a few stitches in. Odds are you won't even need to cut them - just let Hubs rip them out=)
I would think they can "make it a size smaller" themselves.
Honestly, I would let David's do it, but I don't get why they can't do that themselves...
Dresses go more than 1 size down in alterations on a daily basis, lol.
um i don't sew. AT. ALL. ever (well except for a button or pillows).. this is out of my league dearie, i will defer to the expert bees :D
I would take the dress to a non-davids bridal seamstress or dressmaker, and ask what options they could offer you. The consultation should be free.
I think putting in a few stiches would be just fine. My fear is that with the corset and stuff, the flap still won't lie flat or something else will look weird. I've been sewn into a few dresses before and it's not a big deal at all. All you would need is a few stitches.....not like the whole side of the dress done.
What about Hollywood Tape? (double-sided tape that comes in little strips).
I'd just do a few stitches. Especially if it's just to hold down the flap it'll do all you want it to do and won't be as big of a deal as changing to a corset back - especially as you said that your dress fits perfectly I would be hesitant to add a corset back now.
First, that dress is *gorgeous*. I really wanted a dress with ruffles and couldn't find one that I liked - clearly, I should have looked harder!
In regards to the problem you're having: I'm assuming you aren't going to use some sort of super-thick industrial-strength thread to sew the flap shut, in which case I think sewing it should work just fine.
If we stiched it we were thinking of using some type of light weight fishing line so it is see through or some thin white thread to match the lace on the dress. I will try to post pictures of the "problem" when I get them.
If you do stitch it (which i don't recommend but clearly I'm the minority here) I would use invisible thread.
Don't get me started on the alterations people at Davids Bridal. I would highly recommend getting an outside opinion from a bridal seamstress that is not affiliated with David's. I've had horrible issues with the David's seamstresses and finally took my dress out of their hands to a different person who really knows what they are doing... so glad I did! No more tears!!
My dress has a similar problem, so we're adding a line of buttons and elastic loops. That way the dress will lie flat (and look super pretty).
I don't recommend sewing the dress closed. You would have to use a slipstitch in order to properly hide your stitches, and it can be a rather tricky technique to have someone do while you're wearing the dress. And if you use big loopy stitches, it could get snagged and break the thread, which will defeat the purpose.
Take it to an outside seamstress, and see what they have to say.
I'd definitly like to see pictures of the problem. I think my dress has the same issue, actually. I agree with the hook and eye. Let us know if the seamstress has a better solution.
BUttons is an interesting thought. I guess I could put the buttons on the side of the zipper and then the loop under the flap of the zipper cover and pull it over and attach to the back of the dres... hmm.
Here is the best picture I have right now.
You can see at the very bottom of the zipper there are applicays that go over the zipper and snap on the other side. Davids does not have any more applicays and I doubt I can find anything that would match and/or that they could sew on and not look sloppy.

So I went this weekend and picked up my dress from Davids Bridal. I love my dress. However, when I was trying on the dress originally, we noticed that the zipper on the back zipped fine, but the bit of fabric that is supposed to flap over and cover the zipper, didn't lay flat. When you looked at me from that side, you could see a big line of fabric sticking up where it should be laying down. We discussed the concern with our consultant and we asked to order a new dress rather than the floor sample. The hope was that the zipper was not laying flat due to brides trying on the dress day in and day out.
So, even with the new dress, the zipper cover flap does not lay flat. I have taken the dress to two different Davids Bridal stores and there are only a few options here.
Our solution that we are considering is actually putting a few stitches into the zipper flap and sewing it to the dress once I have the dress on. I wouldn't be able to take the dress off until I cut those couple of stitches.
Not sure what to do, or if I maybe am even over thinking this.
Also, btw, for the ceremony and formal pictures I will be wearing a tulle cathedral veil.
