I'm hosting a baby shower for a friend at church (it's a church shower). I'm having trouble picking a theme. What I'm thinking of right now:

    *A bun in the oven

*Alphabet (I could assign people a letter to buy for)

*Around the clock (I could assign people a time to buy presents for, but there's a lot of people invited, the all might not show, and there's not many times)

*General baby (decorate with baby stuff)

I've seen the alphabet shower and I love that idea! Especially because the letter everyone brings is so different so it creates an awesome wall collage. I also like the time idea. I think people get carried away eith baby newborn items. Most times the baby has SO much stuff the first 3 months but after that, nothing!

I do like the alphabet one. I would like to encourage for longer than the first 3 months. Is there an easy way to do that?

I'd check with mom if possible to see what she wants, if it's not a surprise shower. And, I'd go with whatever encourages people to branch out from baby clothes as gifts. Clothes are nice, but in my experience, you're inundated with clothes enough from generous family members and friends (both new and hand-me-down) when people find out that you're expecting. You don't need another-- albeit adorable-- onesie.

The alphabet one could be a good idea-- new parents definitely need things like [nasal] aspirators, bottles, changing pads, diapers, Ergo carriers, first aid kits, etc.
