One of my favorite chick lit authors is Anna Maxted. Running in Heels is a great book.
@Miss Longcoat: Just read the synopsis. Looks pretty good! Adding it to my audiobooks for my next road trip! Thanks!
What other books do you recommend?
Room was absolutely fabulous. I couldn't put it down. I vote for that one!
I highly recommend the Hunger Games series, it was great. Two that go along in that same genre are Unwind by Neal Shusterman and Matched by Ally Condie, which I enjoyed. Also since you like listening to audio books an absolutely hilarious listen is Beauty Queens by Libba Bray. For some good chick lit reads I love anything by Sophie Kinsella.
Could you tell me a little more about Room and why you liked it? Is it sad? I've read the synopsis of it and I'm not sure what to think. I saw that there's a book club going on here about it.
@MrsDibs: Sophie is one of my faves. Her and Emily Giffin. I read this anthology called 'Girls Night Out' and the sequel 'Girls Night In' and I was hooked on chick lit.
It is sad, but it's also very touching. It's told entirely from the point of view of a little boy who has spent his entire life living in a sort of bunker with his mom, who was kidnapped as a college student and forced to live in this one room by her captor. it's touching in the way the woman tries as hard as she can to give him a normal life, has him do lessons everyday so he learns things, comes up with all kinds of games for him to play, all the while practicing and planning for a potential escape. While it was sad, it was a wonderfully written book told from a very interesting point of view.
I did like the Hunger Games and I do think you should read them. However, the first book is the best one. The second was so so and the third was good for the most part.
The book that I recently read (and LOVED) was The Art of Racing in the Rain. Let me forewarn you that the dog does die (you know this from the beginning so it's not like I'm giving anything away) but dont let that stop you from reading it. I also have a hard time with books about animals dying (Same feelings about Marley & Me) but this one was SO good. It's told from the point of view of the dog and he tells about his life with his family. His owner is a race car driver and he talks a lot about how race car driving lessons can be applied to life. I loved it so so much. It's by Garth Stein.
Also, if youve never read The Perks of Being a Wallflower I would highly suggest that!
@ananeele:I love Room! I recommend it every chance I get! But please please read 'Child 44'. It's one of the best books I've read in a long long time. I promise you won't be disappointed.
Here are a few more recent reads that I enjoyed - The Financial Lives of the Poets, The Pillars of the Earth, Those Who Save Us, Sarah's Key, and Abundance.
If you're into YA lit-- Uglies, Pretties, Specials are wonderful books. I enjoyed the Hunger Games but may have enjoyed these even more! (gasp!)
I enjoyed The Art of Racing in the Rain and the Hunger Games too. I didn't get them free on my kindle though.? Lucky you. I need a new book to read so this is a great thread.
@kelmac: If you join Amazon Prime (which is the greatest thing for me since I buy almost everything from them) you get one free book a month. If you read a lot, the price makes up for it and then some.
The Book of Negroes. The Hunger Games. Room was okay. We Need to Talk ABout Kevin. Still Alice and Left Neglected. Twenties Girl - it's by Sophie Kinsella although it IS about a ghost.
For chic lit I LOVE anything by Meg Cabot, she is my favorite =)

I'm in the mood to load up the Kindle and read tonight. I finished 'The Help' last week and loved it. I loved 'Girl With the Dragon Tattoo' and I'm a huge Jen Lancaster fan and used to be a James Patterson fan until all the endings started sounding the same (the cop did it). I love chic lit (ie-Something Borrowed) but I travel a lot and I LOVE listening to those as audiobooks so I avoid reading them so I don't run out of good car books). I don't know if I'm in the mood to start 'Girl Who Played with Fire' because the story is so intense and I don't want to read a book where I've already seen the movie (ie. Water for Elephants -although I loved the movie, it was painful to watch). I was thinking the Hunger Games, but all my 5th graders are reading that and while they LOVE it and I've heard so many good things about it from people my age, I'm not sure. I'm looking for fiction (so Heaven is for Real and The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks is out although I'll read those one day- they look really good), something not too deep that I can get engrossed in easily, but I also love books where you finish it and feel like you've grown as a person from it, and a character I can identify with. And I'm not a sci-fi person and I can't read books about animals dying (Marley and me scarred me for life). See what I mean that I'm picky!
What is a good book you've read recently that you'd recommend to others or a book you've heard people raving about.
I'm debating between The Alchemist, Hunger Games (which is free on the Kindle library), and possibly Room, but I'm totally open for recommendations.
