I’m getting an oval forever brilliant moissanite engagement ring designed, and the center stone will be 3.7 carats. I’m a little worried about this size (I asked for a 3.5, and the jewelry shop received 3.7 and didn’t charge me extra) because I heard AFTER I ordered it, that the larger the center stone the more yellow it is, even if it’s forever brilliant moissanite. It’s already been paid for so their isn’t much turning back, but my boyfriend has it in his possession and I haven’t seen it in person yet. It’s KILLING me not to know what it looks like.
I tried posting a thread looking for large oval shaped moissanite, but I haven’t gotten any responses yet, possibly because they typically don’t make very large ovals in moissanite. So I’d like to broaden my search to anyone with moissanites larger than 1.5 carats or so.
I would LOVE to see some pics of your moissanite, and tell me your feelings about the stone after purchasing it. How does it look in dim light? Does it look dingy next to other people’s real diamonds? Does it ever embarass you? (if you’re not planning to tell people it’s not diamond and it’s ever obvious that it’s not). Do it look like a pretty buttery yellow diamond in certain lights, or just dingey yellow?
Anyone with a stone above 3 carats, or that also has diamonds on the band would be especially helpful! But really I’d take anything!
Pics in a variety of lighting would also be helpful, as I’ve heard it’s most yellow in dim light.
Thanks so much for any and all help/advice/pictures!

@Lyssie: not my ring but I seen this and thought it might help its a 2.2 oval moissanite.

I have lots of large moissy. Here is my oval, it is as big as they come, 10×14. But mine is pink.
10mm unenhanced oec in low lighting
10mm FB OEC showing warmth
same showing grey
showing body colour
I think that is what you can expect in terms of colour, if not whiter. And setting in white metal will make it even whiter.

@jcent: thanks! I LOVE all of your sets. Absolutely gorgeous. I have only seen my stone at the jeweler (under super bright white light) and I put the loose stone into the wax mold, this is all I have to go from. But mine does look pretty gray in some lights… what light settings does your white look whitest, and which light settings does it look gray or yellowish? (I’ll def try to avoid those settings when first showing people my ring). I’d like it to look most like a diamond when I am first showing people.
Here are some pics of it 🙂 (The center pic has the stone turned upside down, so the flat part is touching my skin…that’s probably why it looks so different from the first pic)
Thank you ladies!

The colour of that wax is like the WORST colour for moissy, so you stone will look so much better than that. Over cast weather, like dreary grey is bad for my moiss. And the back seat of my car. I HATE it back there. Everywhere else it is totally fine! And my fav is a sunny day, but in the shade. 🙂

@jcent: I didn’t know you had a unenhanced! They are all gorgeous 🙂
Here are mine. 9 mm rb and 9.5MM unenhanced OEC. Both pick up tons of surrounding color and the oec is more buttery.

@HomeschoolingBeeof4: OBSESSED with your rings.

It sounds like you’re worried you won’t be able to pass it off as a diamond? If that isn’t your concern, than disregard this. Tons of Moissy owners wouldn’t think of letting people believe its a diamond, they want them to know its their beautiful Moissy!
With that said, unless you and your FI were the type of people who had, I don’t know, 60-100k to spend on a 3.7 carat diamond, I would assume it was fake no matter how convincing it looked!
If you love it, who cares what people think.

@jcent: Ugh, give me your whole collection! And if you don’t want to give it to me, do you mind giving me your address and letting me know the next time you’re planning on going out of town? 😉

@HomeschoolingBeeof4: Thank you! Yup. I will be selling that OEC though, and putting a coloured gem in that setting.
@jessicadarling: LOL It is actually growing beyond my comfort zone.

@jcent: I love your rings. They’re so gorgeous…all of them! I know I’ve said it before but your collection is stunning. I’m somewhat envious…as are, I would imagine, many of the people who see your rings. Hopefully I’ll start my own collection sooner rather than later. 😉
@HomeschoolingBeeof4: Love your rings too! I didn’t know your OEC was unenhanced–it looks so white!
@Lyssie: Hey Lyssie, I think your oval looks very pretty. I don’t own a moissanite, but I think that jcent’s point about the color of the wax mold not being a great one to show off the moissanite is a good one. For what it’s worth, I would venture to guess that a puke green mold wouldn’t make a diamond look good either–it just seems like it would be unflattering to any stone!
I was poking around WB and I found these pictures of a 3.5 carat (9.5 mm) moissanite that a Bee named naplis posted. It’s a round brilliant stone, and I think those tend to show less color than ovals. To me, the stone looks colorless in these photos, though maybe a bit grey in the first one.
I also found a couple more pictures of the oval halo moissanite posted in your other thread by a Bee who was not the owner. mdancer78, the owner of this ring, said in one of her posts:
“2.2 ct oval halo moissanite ring, enhanced…i adore it! sparkles like crazy! Mine has a very slight yellow tint (only at certain angles in overcast day)..otherwise beautiful white ;0)”
With this oval ring, I can see the slight yellow tint in the second picture, but in the other two photos it looks completely colorless to me. As far as I know, moissanites are in the near colorless range so there will be some body color and you might see it sometimes. Diamonds in that color range would show some body color too.

@MissMarple: aww, thank you! My dh and I are pretty settled in our lives now, and with young kids and 3 dogs, vacations are a thing of the past. So I get sparkly things..he gets car things, lol.

@jcent: Ok, I’m loving your rose gold set!!!! I’m from Canada as well…where do you get your moissy rings from?

@Scintillante: They are all from Schubach’s 🙂

I LOVE both of your ring sets to pieces!!! In fact I took the plunge and ordered my first moissanite (8mm FB loose stone) based on photos you two shared on WB.
I changed my diamond ring from a solitaire to a halo setting in 2012 but I miss the look of solitaire with blingy band. I didn’t have the nerve to tell my husband I want to change it back bcuz we spent quite a bit $$ on the diamond setting. Moissanite gives me the guilt-free option.
