I've done Pilates in the past and loved it, but I wasn't trying to lose weight at that time.

Nooooow, I've got 10 weeks until my wedding and am trying to lose 15 pounds!  Any thoughts on whether Pilates will help?

I love pilates! But since I've started training with weights, most body weight exercises don't do enough for me. Of course it's always fabulous for your abs.

I think pilates is good for toning but you probably need to do some cardio and dieting to lose weight.

You would have to spend a LOT of time doing pilates to lose 15 pounds.  As in, somewhere around 20 hours a week of pilates!  The pilates will, however, help with toning, which can make you look thinner even if you don't lose weight.

One thing it WILL do though is improve your posture.  When I did it, my general physical condition didn't change much, but I stood up straigher which made me a lot happier with my abs.

You definitely shouldn't just do pilates if you want to lose weight, nothing beats cardio for that... but pilates will help tone your middle and back... which will make you look awesome in your wedding dress...

I agree with Kay7, nothing beats cardio to lose weight. Have you considered doing something like a 30 day shred?

To lose weight you just need to eat less calories in a day than you burn. Any added physical activity will help with weight loss.

If you love pilates, I'd definitely do it! Maybe you could try to add in some more cardio intense workouts like moo suggested, the 30 day shred is great! Running, biking, skip ropping and stairclimbing are also fab for weight loss!

I dissagree that pilates cant be used for weight loss. Yoga and pilates are both excellent for weight loss when done in the right intensity. Gaining lean muscle mass is one of the most effective ways to increase your calorie burning potential. Sometimes exercises to gain muscle ( for example weight training in circuits) is actually more effective at burning fat than just cardio alone. Cardio is important, but exercises to build tone and muscle are just as important if not more. Pilates and yoga are excellent at creating a toned and lean body!

i agree with all the comments above... pilates is great for toning!!! but to lose weight do it in conjunction with a variety of other workout methods too... CARDIO FOR SURE. 30-day shred is great, and diet, diet, diet! (eat healthfully that is, no crash diet!Laughing ) you'll do great!!!!!

Also - be careful about the type of pilates/yoga you do.  A lot of pilates dvd's aren't very intense and IMHO doing an hour or so of low-intensity ab work won't do much to help you lose weight.  As my pilates teacher also said - if you don't do cardio/diet all you'll get is toned abs under a layer of belly fat.

When I did Pilates religiously, I didn't lose a lot of weight, but I did lose inches and I got really toned. I had the best butt ever then! I found that the best thing to do is mix your pilates/yoga with some cardio.

pilates is hardcore (i found a class and only went to the first lol) but i think if your goal is to lose weight more quickly intense cardio and eating really well (staying in calorie range) is the best route

Nutrition! Eating right is going to be the best way to lose weight. Combine that with a weight training (twice a week)  and pilates and a little cardio and you will be set! PM if you have any questions about nutrition.

Pilates + low calorie diet was actually the most effective diet for me losing weight.  It was MUCH more effective than Weight Watchers & gym 3-6 times a week. So I think depending on your body type and how it responds, it could be really effective.  I used the basic Winsor Pilates and it worked great!
