A friend of mine used Creations by Carlini, she said her cake was awesome and not very expensive... they are based out of McKees Rocks. http://www.creationsbycarlini.com
I'm not sure where we're getting ours from yet... that's on the to-do list! Cake tastings... yuum :)
When I responded to your other post I didn't realize you lived in pittsburgh. Bethel Bakery is very tasty, though the biggest thing I've had from there is a birthday cake. I have no idea how expensive they are but they are worth looking into.
I went to several tastings . . . I tried out Bethel Bakery (South Hills), Signature Desserts (South Hills), Cakes by Cheryl (Cannonsburg) and Pastries Ala Carte (South Hills) -- my favorite was by far Pastries Ala Carte.
Their buttercream was fantastic and the cake was super moist. I loved both their vanilla and almond cake. They are super-easy to work with, they're prices are reasonable and they're servings are very nice size.

Good luck!!
I used to work for Lincoln Bakery and their buttercream is to die for.
We ordered our cake from Oakmond bakery, and were thrilled. Their cake is wonderful and they were very easy going.
We had NO idea what we wanted, so we ordered samples of each variety.
Something to know - when they "samples," they really mean sample cakes. We didn't realize this and were initially a little put off by the fact that they only give you one sample for free and then charge you like $6 for the rest. When, in reality, the "sample" was an entire cake, that could serve at least 6 to 8 people. Well worth $6 (although I'm not sure that we needed all of that cake.) The person that we worked with also brought out different fillings for us to taste on top of the ones that the sample cakes were made with.
We decided to book with them based on that tasting and since we put a deposit down, they gave us the cakes for free! So, we little left with four cakes.. it was crazy.
Anyway, they were great. We provided them with an inspiration picture and it looked great. They worked with my florist since we did a lot of flowers on it, and the delivery was even free, since our reception was in Oakmont.
Loved them!
I'm getting my cake from Prantl's. I am obsessed with their burnt almond torte, and they said they can do tiered, wedding cake style. Also, they have the cutest mini-cupcakes for $1 each so I'm going to get a selection of those too. They had four different flavors and they were all amazing, plus they looked great together! Now I just need to find a 14" cake stand... Why are these so hard to find?!?
Signature desserts is soooo amazing. They have the best cake in Pittsburgh at the best price hands down. They offer a dessert table along with your wedding cake that includes all sorts of cakes, pies, tarts, etc and it still costs less than what a normal bakery charges. After delivery fee I got a 4 tier wedding cake that will feed 130 plus all the other desserts for around $450. Linda and Steve are soooo nice and really work with you to get the cake of ur dreams.
HIGHLY HIGHLY reccomend them!
We are going to go with Lincoln Bakery in Bellevue...just got our samples today. Price is $2.75/slice for a filled cake. We also tried Carlini's which was very good; however, their fillings were subtly flavored buttercream and we wanted bolder, more fruity type filling. Carlini's prices were very similar to Lincoln Bakery. I went to a tasting at Bethel Bakery with a friend a few years ago, and their cakes are very good. After getting their pricing info, I decided not to even consider them for our wedding because it was significantly more than what we would pay with Carlini's/Lincoln.
I'd have to 2nd Bethel Bakery, or Pastries a la Carte.
We're going to do a buttercream only cake as well. Good luck finding your bakery, and let us know what you decide.
What about Dozen Cupcakes. I've never seem the do a wedding but they cupcakes are super yummy and they have lots of pics on their website www.dozencupcakes.com
Hi!! First time poster here. :)
We tasted cakes at Signature Desserts, Bethel Bakery, & Potmac Bakery. Bethel Bakery was almost $200 more than the other two bakeries for the same size/type of wedding cake.
We're going with Potomac - our 4-tiered cake will be around $450. Not sure what type of flavor you're going for, but their buttercream icing is very light and smooth. We're having almond flavored.
Signature was great as well - and they actually give you an entire cake to take home after the tasting - but we didn't want the dessert bar.
While Oakmont Bakery is good, I know a lady who does awesome work & great taste out of her house! Her name is Barbara Mileski (412-828-5532). She's extremely reasonable, easy to work with, and does offer delivery. Her wedding cakes are beautiful, and if you get filling, that makes it even better! It doesn't hurt to call & test taste!
check out bethel bakery and ask for christine. tell her jessica weinheimer sent you. its an amazing bakery.

I'm looking for recommendations for bakers in the Pittsburgh area. While it may be pretty, I. Cannot. Stand. the taste of fondant. So, buttercream frosting only. Mmmmm ... buttercream. I'm still undecided whether I want to do a cake or cupcakes, and I'm WAY more interested in tasty than pretty, but both would be lovely. My short list is as follows:
Oakmont Bakery
Signature Desserts
Autumn's Cakes
Cakes by Tammy
Does anyone have experience with these places? Or somewhere else fabulous to recommend? All of these places start around $2.50/slice (except Signature, which doesn't have any prices on their website...), so I'd like to stay around there. Thanks, bees!
