I'm trying to get some of my bridesmaids to come to Pittsburgh in November to help me find a dress. We won't need BM dresses (they're picking their own), so no need to worry about that. I definitely want to spend less than $1000, ideally closer to $500. Of the dresses I've seen online, I find Maggie Sottero's to be really appealing, but I've not tried anything on. Any recommendations on where I should go? Are there any local shops that allow customers to take photos? At this point, I'm planning on going to MB Bride in Greensburg and Bridal Beginning in Pittsburgh. Anyone have experience with these shops?

I have heard great things about MB Bride and mixed reviews about Bridal Beginning.  I bought my gown from Tomasina and had a wonderful experience.  I felt very comfortable in every gown I tried on and they were really good and picking out styles that looked good on me.  I also shopped at Anne Gregory and Greg (the owner) was super nice!

    Good luck!

I bought my dress at Brides by Candalina and they had no problems with us taking pictures when I was trying on dresses.  They have dresses that run the gamut of prices, but my dress was only $495, which I thought was very affordable.

You also don't need an appointment, which I thought was helpful.  They don't have a website, so here is their address:

    1700 Monongahela Ave
    Pittsburgh, PA 15218-2356
    (412) 241-6222

My dress designer was Jasmine (www.jasminebridal.com) but I'm not sure what other dress lines they carry. However, I'm sure you could call to find out!

Enjoy dress shopping! It was my favorite part of wedding planning....

I never actually checked them out, but when I lived in Mt Lebanon there were a ton around that area. I think Anne Gregory was one of them, but there were a few on my walk home from the T. I know I'm not much help, but good luck in your dress search.

You could try One Enchanted Evening in Wexford. One of my girlfriends got her dress there and said the experience went really well!

I live in MD but I grew up in PGH and my entire family still lives there.  I ordered my dress this weekend from MB Brides.  I LOVED it there.  I had Aleisha P. as my consultant for the 2nd time.  She was wonderful.  I never felt pressured and I felt like they listened to what I had to say.  They give you a robe and you can walk around the store picking up the dresses you like.  They will also pick dresses according to your style.  For me, it is worth the 4 hour drive.  GO during a trunk show.  I got lucky and my dress was not usually there.  It was part of the show.  The rooms there are big and private.  Great to bring your bridal party/family with you.   They allow you to take pictures.  I loved this!

I did not have a pleasant experience at One Enchanted Evening.  They have a very small selection and I felt very pressured to buy right away. They also do not allow pictures and will not even give you the style name # if you are interested in a gown.  For example:  I tried on a Pronovias gown and was unsure if it was the one.  I wanted the style # or name to look at it online further but she would not give it up.

    Good Luck!  Stick with MB.

Go to Sorelles' in Washington Pa.  They are absolutely amazing there!  I had the best experience there.  You will feel like a queen when you walk through the door!!!!!  I look forward to my fittings just to see all the girls there.  I don't know what I"m going to do when I don't have to go there anymore!!!

I adore Ann Gregory. It was amazing. They are wonderful. Greg is so knowledgeable and I loved working with him. He's in Mt. Lebo. Be sure to check him out.

I had a good experience at One Enchanted Evening, although I would agree that the selection seems to be a bit small.  I worked with Debbie and she was great--no pressure to buy right away.

    I think it's worth a trip.

Definetly avoid the Bridal Beginning (in Mount Lebanon). They are so pushy and are so concerned with making a sale that they ruin the fun and exciting experience dress shopping should be. I went there with my mom and sister and was only allowed to try on 3 gowns before the sales lady started with the "which of these is your dress" "you need to make a decision tonight- you are running out of time" (keep in mind I had about a year to my wedding). Then my mom asked about the price of the gowns and was snapped out "price shouldn't matter- it should be what she loves". I agree to some point but come on... that was rude.

I decided to look around some more and found a place called Mary's in Beaver Falls. It is a really small family owned botique but they have so many gowns and the staff is amazing. Sandy sat down and asked what I pictured myself wearing on my wedding day. She came back wtih a ton of dresses to try and made me feel like a princess. There was absolutely no pressure to buy (in fact she encouraged me to "let my heart think it over"). They include all alterations in the price of the dress and only require 1/2 down to order (you can pay of the balance over as long as you want).

When the bridal beginning called to follow up with me, i explained that I purchased my dress elesewher because I was not happy with how I was treated and the pushy make the sale now attitude. The manager got on the phone and told me how I wasted their time and that I was "rude and spoiled" then hung up the phone before i could respond. I was in shock, but after going online and reading the reviews about the salon i see that this is pretty much their norm.

I have to disagree about MB Bride. They are fine to LOOK at dresses but DO NOT BUY your dress from them. Find what you want there and order it from somewhere else. They have a great selection but most of them (except for my seamstress Jill, she was wonderful and not pushy and did a good job on my alterations, so for those who have gotten their dress from here ask for her) were not pleasant to work with.

They ordered the wrong length dress for me (I am 5'8" and therefore definitely over 5'9" in heels, which is they height at which most people recommend you order extra length for your dress) even after we asked them whether or not it would work with my height they assured me things would be fine. When I tried on my dress right after it came in they argued with me that I was wearing the dress "too high" and that was the problem, even though that was the exact same spot I wore it when I tried on the sample dress and no one said anything to me about it being too high. I thought I was supposed to be a bride getting married in a church and wanting to keep cleavage to a minimum, not a porn star who lets it all hang out, my bad.

They actually had tried to get me to order the same size as the sample dress which was already big on me (i.e. would already need taken in at least 3-4 inches which would have greatly altered the cut of the dress, but this was probably why it looked just long enough with the heels I had on since I was swimming in it) and I hadn't even started on getting in shape yet as the wedding was a year a way at that point. We had to have two people from alterations come down to tell the consultant the sample dress was not the correct size to order, which they did. Thank goodness I stood my ground on this and ordered a smaller size because I even needed to have that one taken in a little bit.

Also every time I called (I had to change one of my appointments and called about picking up my veil for my run through) they were very rude to me on the phone as if I was greatly inconveniencing them. I mean, I don't like having to reschedule, but sometimes in life things come up that we don't expect and rearrangements need to be made if possible. You would have thought I was asking for a kidney though.

In the end they did give me a pair of shoes for free since I was having trouble finding shoes I liked that had a smaller heel (so the dress wasn't too short) that was within my price range but they came back dyed a shade that wasn't what I wanted. They did try to re-dye them and it helped a little bit, but it still was off.

I had taken my grandmother to Brides by Candalina to look for her outfit. The little bell dinged when we went in but no one ever came to greet us (and we were looking at dresses for at least 15 mins). Apparently YOU have to be the one to track them down. Maybe that was just a bad day for them, we all have those, but I will be wary if I ever need to look for something there again.

One of my bridesmaids is getting married in June and she bought her dress at the Exquisite Bride (we also almost bought my girls' bridesmaids dresses from here but the one we liked didn't come in the colors I wanted). There is one in Wexford and one on Route 8 in Richland I think it is (it's not to far from the turnpike entrance on 8).

Every girl has a different experience, so the best of luck where ever you go!!

I second Sorelle's in Washington County!! The girls there were great... and they give you free cupcakes.

Not a fan of Bridal Beginnings in Mt. Leboo, the women there seem overly pushy, but will probably get my BM dresses there because its so close to my house.

I have been to all of the places listed and have to say I disagree completely with your review of Bridal Beginning. Do you remember the manager you spoke with? They were so kind to me and didn't pressure me at all. I probably tried on 7-8 dresses at a time.  I am completely anal when it comes to finding the perfect dress and came back three times before I finally decided what I wanted to do. The buyer of the store and the owner even helped me to custom create my own dress b/c the dress I fell in love with was one I wanted to try on even though it was way out of my price range (6000). Then even offered to let me buy the sample for half price. I am shocked that they treated you like that. In fact when I go in for my fitting I am going to tell them about this post b/c I can't believe they would be like that!

One Enchanted Evening was very snobby and did not cater to my needs. They also didn't let me take pictures of the dresses that I liked (BB did)

MB Brides had a large selection but was too general.

Exquisite brides was nice but didn't have the type of dress I wanted.

Mary's was my second favorite. They were also very kind and helpful. The manager was supposed to call me about a veil. (She was going to NYC and was looking to buy crystal head pieces and birdcages and told me she'd call me in November. I never heard from her.) Other than that they are a great store.

Another great place is Deborahs near Beaver Falls. (My cousin got her dress there and we ordered our bridesmaids dresses there for her wedding and they were great and had a good selection as well.)

I never went to Anne Gregory's but have heard wonderful things about them as well. From what I have read, they, along with Bridal Beginning are the high end bridal stores in the Pittsburgh area.

I got my dress at The Exquisite Bride in Murrysville, and I cannot say enough positive things about the overall shopping experience.  I also visited MB Bride in Greensburg, which was better than I expected, given the horrible reviews I had read online.  I just thought The Exquisite Bride was a little more professional, a little more personal, and a little more polished.  I had a consultant who was working with me one-on-one the whole time, attentively listening to what I did and did not like about each dress.  PLUS they let you take pictures, which was an awesome momento of the day that I didn't get at any other salon I visisted.  At MB Bride, my consultant was nice but she was working with 2-3 brides at any one point in time, so there were periods of time where I would be waiting to take a dress off for 5-10 minutes.  Also, the store's managers did an insufficent job (in my opinion) of keeping the other shoppers in check... specifically, one bride came with at least 15 people (of all ages) who were running all over the store, shouting, etc.  I thought the managers should have politely stepped in to see if the family could have been more attended to in order to result in a more positive shopping experience for everyone.

One last thing... shortly after I purchased my dress from The Exquisite Bride, I received a hand-written thank-you note for the business, which I thought was a very classy touch.
