I grew up in Pittsburgh, but have loved in DC for thirteen years.  I’d DEFINITELY stay in Pittsburgh- the cost of living is awful in the dc area.  We always say- unless you have both people making 6 figures. It’s too much of a struggle to live well.  Your money goes so much farther on the Burgh.  I make an ok salary teaching, but it’s also built up after all these years.  And, I have a condo, but the price I paid is the price of a single family home in Pittsburgh.

I’ve lived in DC for 15 years. I love it here, but holy shit is it expensive! My 1200 sq foot 2 bedroom, 2 bath condo cost what a 4-5 bedroom single family house costs in Pittsburgh. So yes, new places are fun, but you’ll have. Much better quality of life in Pittsburgh – way less worrying about money.

Went to school in Pittsburgh for my undergraduate degree. I’m back in the south now, but I loved Pittsburgh-great cost of living for an east coast city, and many things to do in the surrounding area. DC just seems too expensive and not somewhere I would see as cost effective for raising a family.<br />Pittsburgh, hands down.

OP: Financially, it makes sense to stay in Pittsburgh plus you have family there. I like DC myself, but financially doesn’t make much sense. Good luck!

I livein the DC area now and love it but as PP stated your money will go. Much further in Pitt. If u want to save money pick Pitt, if u want the big city and all that comes with it, pick DC.

Best wishes in Pittsburgh!  I love that city.  There’s a lot to do, but you’re not far from “the country.”  Also, great food!  Winters are something you’ll just have to live with – so go shopping for some wool socks and lots of warm layers.  I’d say check out Pittsburgh Dad on youtube, but it might just confuse you!

ImaStarr:  Another steele city gal here. My brother lives in the DC area. He actually wants to move because of the cost of living. I think Pittsburgh is really nice as far as cities go. Do you want to live in the actual city, or outside? Personally, I love the south side.

ImaStarr:  I live right outside the city in the neighborhood of Robinson Township and I love it! It’s got the mall, a huge grocery store, tons of shops and restaurants, a movie theater, etc. If you want to be in the city though I would look into Shady Side.
