We honeymooned in Playa del Carmen and LOVED it.  We stayed at the Royal Hideaway.  (This was 2 years ago).  The town of Playa is really nice (well, 5th Ave, the tourist area) and has some great restaurants.  The beaches are beautiful as well.

I cannot recommend the El Dorado Gourmet Resort & Spa in Riveria Maya enough!  The gournet food is divine, and the beaches and rooms are beautiful. The spa was amazing, too.  We loved it and can’t wait to go back

Playa Del Carmen and Cozumel are both AWESOME! Anywhere in the Riveria Maya area is breathtaking!!!! I have always gone through http://www.AppleVacations.com and they are the best in the business. You will get first class service guaranteed for a very resonable price! You cannot beat their “all inclusive” packages… I have traveled all over the world, with different carriers and I will never travel with any other carrier now since Apple spoiled me 🙂

If you’re thinking Puerto Vallarta I reccomend finding an AI in Bucerias, It’s a smaller town just north of Vallarta, Beautiful less touristy but so friendly. You can walk around the streets and not worry about anyone bothering you.. Except for maybe tge stray dogs looking for a petting.. I’ve stayed at “The Royal De Cameron Complex”  Very family friendly – But thats just my two cents.

Anywhere in Mexico is gorgeous!

We live in Michigan. With air fare and all inclusive we spent under $2500. We stayed 7 nights at the Grand Palladium in Riviera Maya. IT WAS AMAZING!!!! We want to go back sooo bad!!!!

ETA: We went through Apple as well. BEST experience ever!

@newguy3972:  I’ve been to two all inclusives near Playa del Carmen. Excellence Cancun is super nice. The other was alright.. Sandos Playcar I think it’s called. It’s generally a really nice area. No security worries whatsoever either time I was there.

@newguy3972:  My FI and I actually just booked our honeymoon in Mexico for September of this year using his father’s RCI account! We wound up choosing Dreams Riviera Cancun, and the AI fees were about $144 per day per person, and that was for the Preferred Club and upgraded room. I know exactly what you mean about the other resorts AI fees, some of them can be outrageous! We looked on Trip Advisor and Youtube to find reviews of REAL people, and we’ve seen a lot of great things about this resort (and Dreams in general). Try and check out Dreams Riviera Cancun on RCI, I don’t think you will be dissapointed!

We’ve gone to the Riviera Maya twice and loved it both times.  I think Akumal might be one of my favorite places on earth.

We are adventure travelers so we’ve gone snorkling with the sea turtles, zip lining, kayaking, ATVing in the jungle, cave swimming, taken amphibious vehicles through caves, underwater river rafting, etc…  We aren’t really the type to relax on our vacations.

In that respect, mainland was better for us because there was more to do for cheaper.  Cozumel is a little more limited, but nicer if you just want to relax on the beach or do a watersport.

@newguy3972:  as a Mexican I have the best advice for you I loveee Mexico I honeymoones in Mexico.. ( we live in Montreal ) and I dream of my beloved mexico all the time.

The first 2 weeks of May are Low season. you will have great weather and No spring breakers.

Playa del carmen is a great choice for many reasons:

Direct flights , white sandy beaches , turquoise waters, all inclusive hotels and for the adventurers: chichen itza , celestun, tulum, uxmal, izamal…..  only a few hours a way by car of by tour.

I would suggest 3 days in Merida and the rest resing at the beach in playa del carmen but that is just me 🙂
