My fiancé is from New Zealand and we have been living over here together for the past 3+ years. I am from the US and have always dreamed of having my wedding in my home town. So… my fiancé being as wonderful as he is has agreed to have our wedding in the States.
We have decided to have a long engagement (just over 2 years) in order to give his family and friends enough time to save up for flights over. We are hopefully going to be able to help his grooms men and their wives with their airfares but as a return flight for 1 person is about $2000 – $3000 I’m not sure how much we can really contribute with having to spend money on so many other things.
Anyway, I know that I have now just under 2 years to get organised but I am already a bit nervous as I will only have this Christmas and next Christmas in the States to get everything done that I need to do in person, like flowers, cake, invitations etc. Now the great thing about having a long engagement is the church, the reception hall, and the band I want are all available!
I feel like I want to plan everything now but I also know that I shouldn’t do a lot of things till closer to the date as a whole assortment of things can change. I really want to enjoy the whole process of planning the wedding but I feel like I am just waiting for time to go by.
How have other people handled having a long engagement? or planning long distance?

We’re planning long distance! We live in California but are getting married back home in Canada. Like you, I’m going home at Christmas and will do some stuff then, but mostly I just hire vendors from here and try to accept the fact that it’s all out of my hands!

Ask your fellow Bees for help! Fi and I live in VA but are getting married in 1.5 years in the FL Keys. Even though the travel from VA to FL is much cheaper than from NZ to the states, due to our work/research schedules, we can only go to FL for a few times in the next 2 years to be there for the “in person” stuff, so I feel ya!
I posted a few things on the ‘Bee (asking for advice) and I have found several bees who live/used to live/are familiar with my wedding area, and have given me a TON of ideas on venues. Right now, I am doing some email and phone work so I can narrow down the venues choices so my time spent in the Keys can be as efficient as possible.
What town are you getting married in?

I planned my IN wedding from CA/TX in 10 months (I moved in the middle of wedding planning). I was only home one time during the wedding planning outside of the week before the wedding itself. The one time I was home was around the Christmas holiday so there were only 3 days that anywhere was even open for us to make appointments.
You’ll have to rely a lot on family who still live in or near your hometown. My mom was an absolute godsend during planning, visiting places, meeting with vendors, taking and sending me pictures, etc. Although too – you’ll be really surprised how much you can do / find / research online too!
