We are planning to start TTC next year, about 9 months away.
Im 32 and have never been pregnant before. I’m not on any contraception, we are just usiNg condoms/pull out method.
Is there anything I need to do? Do I need to visit the doctor and tell them? Vitamins? Charting? Giving up smoking obviously :/ that’s a work in progress.
Or should we just wing it?
Any advice is much appreciated.

If there’s a chance you might conceive, it’s definitely worth starting to take folic acid in advance.
The main reasons you might want to visit a doctor prior to TTC is if you have any medical conditions which might make it difficult to conceive (for example endometriosis), or if you have any medical conditions which might impact on pregnancy (for example diabetes, hypothyroidism, heart problems). Also if you’re on any medications, you might want to check that they’re safe in pregnancy and check if there are any alternatives if necessary.
I think charting is a personal thing – some people dont bother, some might find it takes the spontaneity out of sex, other people find it really helpful. If you have irregular periods, Or if you really really want to conceive within a certain timescale you might want to chart. Or you might want to wing it for a few months and if youre not having any success then try charting. There’s no right or wrong answer, it’s a personal decision.
Overall just try and stay stay fit and healthy. And good luck with quitting smoking, that’s really very important.

With my first pregnancy, I went to the dr before starting ttc. He told me the basics of starting prenatals (do that now! The earlier the better) and showed me how to chart. He also did a papand breast check to make sure i was healthy and reaforth have a baby. I think it was important to go and do that. But wi this next pregnancy I probably won’t go before ttc ..I feel like I already know what I need to. If you feel like you have any questions or if you haven’t had a pap or breast check in awhile I’d go to get that done before you get prego. Good luck!

this thread just got reinvigorated and might help http://boards.weddingbee.com/topic/officially-ttc-in-the-new-year-not-sure-where-to-start-help/
I will say that you should go to the dentist before you start! Try and make sure you’re good on that front since you don’t want to have an issue when you’re pregnant

Lauren267: a regular cleaning appointment is fine and recommended, but extra procedures such as x-rays or anything with anesthesia is questionable.

Lauren267: My doctor told me that 3 months out I should get a physical and have my thyroid and folic acid levels checked. I’m glad I did– my thyroid was off.
He told me to start taking a pre-natal 3-6 months out and encouraged me to not chart/use opks until we knew I wouldn’t conceive easily. He said wine and lots of sex in the first three cycles do the trick for most people.
In the year leading up to TTC he told me to get as healthy as possible. This meant eating right, exercising, and building strength. There was a target weight and body fat percentage I neneeded to be to carry a baby. I have one more week to Get there (bring on the leftover Halloween candy!), but am so much healthier now!
