Hi everyone....my future fiance and i have been looking at rings for months and i finally found my setting! So exciting :) I always thought a 1 carat diamond would be perfect although after seeing so many rings and trying on larger diamond rings I started to voice my opinion to him that maybe bigger is better? Nothing over 1.5 carats though...
anyway, he told me today that if I wanted a slightly larger diamond then he woud get my setting in 14K white gold...however if i wanted a smalled carat diamond he could afford to get the setting in platinum...He said it works out monetary wise the same but its my preference...i told im it didnt really matter to me at all...
Any opinion? Platinum vs larger diamond?
I guess it depends on your setting. Personally, I would go for platinum if your band isn't paved because gold scratches. But, if there are diamonds all around it or even half of it, then there's no need to worry about apparent scratches.
My way of thinking is that you can always upgrade your setting, but I wouldn't want to upgrade my center stone. I would pay more for the diamond now and less on the band.
Plat and WG are slightly different colors. Have you tried each on to see how you like them with your skin tone?
I'd go for the bigger diamond... or offer to help out with the difference to get platinum...
I would go with the bigger diamond. Nobody will know the difference between the metals, but they'll for sure see the larger diamond :)
If the bigger diamond is still high quality, get that. I personally opted for platinum because I can't be arsed to re-plate with rhodium, but I have a colored gemstone, not a diamond.
My setting is from Scott Kay Charisma, and its kind of like a pave so it has diamonds down the sides of the ring. I havent really noticed a difference in color between the two, but I spoke with a couple of people who had to have their 14 K rings "dipped" every few years b/c it starts to fade. I heard though that platinum bends more easily? I'm not sure which way to go.
Platinum best compliments diamonds, but I feel like the other bees are right, it is easier to upgrade the band and setting later than to upgrade the stone.
bigger diamond.
I have 14K white gold and I bang this sucker around on everything... I'm a clumsy bee. It still looks the same as the day he put it on my finger =) I had a similar choice to make and I wanted that 1 carat diamond... I love sparkles!
(1) Determine how much you like platinum. You may not like the weight of it, or the patina.
(2) Do you like white gold? Scott Kay probably doesn't use nickel, but I'd double check if you have any metal allergies. Also, do you mind the slightly yellowish color of white gold? Some people aren't very color sensitive (or prefer the warmer color), others can't stand it.
(3) Is this your forever setting?? Forever ring?? In my opinion, if this is your forever ring, go with platinum. It's lower maintenance, it's stronger, it's naturally white, and overall it is more durable. If this is not your forever ring (setting) go with white gold and the bigger diamond. Just as others have said, you can upgrade later.
I would choose the bigger diamond. I love my white gold ring, and like another bee mentioned, I am ROUGH on it. I have never had any scratches, and after 2 years, it is just as shiny and white as the day I got it.
Personally, I'd go with a bigger/higher quality diamond. :)
I definitely think you should go for the bigger diamond! You can always upgrade your setting later. I have a 14k white gold engagement ring and I NEVER take it off so you can rest assured that it gets pretty beat up with my average day to day life. It still looks amazing though and the same as when he proposed.
I'd go bigger diamond too. Platinum is very ... cold looking. I honestly prefer Wg. You could look into Palladium too if that was offered
I don't understand why platinum is so popular.. personally I like white gold better. I think the color is warmer. My e-ring, band and my FI's band are all white gold because we liked it better. So yes I also say bigger diamond.
Bigger diamond for sure. Most places will replate your white gold for cheap/free if that's your only problem with WG. You can always upgrade the setting later if you really want.
Bigger diamond.
I went through a similiar situation with my setting. The platinum and white gold difference was quite substantial so we had a nice talk with our jeweler about which was better. My shanks are plain and polished and he said that white gold would be more scratch resistant and he offered lifetime plating for the ring. Also, when I tried on the settings, I felt the heft of the platinum and wasn't a fan. White gold is lighter feeling and more comfortable to wear for me personally. Platinum is denser so it's heavier but more mendable and if it's a thin shank then it may bend in the future.
As for plating, some people will never need to plate their rings because of their own body chemistry. It all depends. If it is alloyed with palladium or x1 then it shouldn't need to be plated as often as nickel.
However, if platinum is really important for you to have, then go for platinum.
I would recommend that if you go for white gold, you still get a platinum head (prongs) to hold the main diamond as it's stronger. For pave--if you have any in the setting, white gold actually works better because it's less malleable than platinum. The thing with white gold is you will have to get it re-dipped every few years or it will start to yellow. I have 18K white gold with a platinum head and I personally love it and don't feel like I would like full platinum any better, but I wanted gold originally.
Bigger diamond.
Like Lindsay, I am super rough on my ring too. I'm the girl that always has little cuts and scratches on her hands because I constantly bang them on stuff (or my friend's cat mauls me, but thats another story). My white gold is holding up really, really well. No yellowing, minimal scratching. Ive been wearing it for almost 2 years and it's going strong.
I honestly don't think there's any noticeable difference between platinum and white gold. I told FI not to waste his money on platinum as no one really notices - comparing my white gold with my friend's platinum, you honestly can't tell the difference. I know others have mentioned a slight yellowish tinge to white gold, but I have never seen that. It may depend on the quality of white gold...perhaps talk to a jeweler about that. In terms of scratching - I too am very rough on my ring and it still looks absolutely perfect, a year and a half later. Ultimately, it's up to you but I think platinum is a waste of money - but that could just be me! :-)
No question, go for the bigger diamond. The diamond in my engagement ring when we purchased it was high quality but a smaller size, it was 1/3 carat. Over the years my husband has mentioned getting a bigger stone but I was always "No, I like the one you bought me, it has sentimental value". Well, that was until I got a bigger diamond. My mom gave me a ring that was my grandmother's and it happened to be 1 carat. I jumped at the chance to change out the diamond in my engagement ring and after having done so, I have no doubt that the larger diamond makes me 100% happy. I probably wouldn't have ever changed it though had the new diamond not been my grandmother's. It has sentimental value as well as it's absolutely gorgeous.
Go for the bigger stone.
Bigger diamond. No question.
I had to decide between white gold and platinum and decided I liked white gold more. Getting it re-dipped every so often isnt a big deal. Most jewelry stores will do it for free when you buy your ring there - or a small cost.
A high quality 1.5 carat diamond costs about twice as much as a 1 carat diamond, which is a lot more than the difference between a white gold and platinum setting and means the bigger diamond would be much lower quality than the smaller one at the same price.
I'd go for 1 carat in the platinum setting.
What about Paladium - its similar quality to Platinum and much cheaper.
I personally went for the 1c Platinum because I'm to lazy for the redipping so didn't even consider white gold. I also have small fingers but I think it depends how they look on your hand.
I think you should go fo the 1 carat with platinum. 1 carat is already plenty big, and I agree with the reasons stated by @Tessa931
I guess I'm the odd-ball. I would go for a slightly smaller diamond and a platinum setting.
Even going a few ticks down under the "1.0" mark can make a significant difference in price. Nobody is going to notice the difference between a .9 ct diamond and a 1.0 ct diamond, but the cost seems to shoot up once the 1.0 mark is crested.
I REALLY prefer white gold. It can be redipped and definitely stronger than platinum. I am a little biased as mine is a 1.8 TCW in 14K white gold. Good luck!
I think it would depend on the difference between stones. As Tessa931 says... 1 to 1.5 is a BIG difference in money so I am guessing that is not the difference you're talking about? If it really were 1 vs. 1.5 I'd go for the bigger diamond in white gold (assuming diamonds were the same quality). But if we're talking about 1.35 vs. 1.5... well I feel like that wouldn't be very noticeable at all so I'd much rather get the 1.35 and get platinum.
It is just a preference thing but I have platinum and I love it. I like the cooler color better than white gold, and that it never has to be replated. And I really like the heft of it. It DOES scratch easier and after time all the little scratches are what they call "patina" and your ring gets kind of a more matte grey finish rather than super shiny white gold. You can get the ring polished regularly to keep it shiny, but I actually prefer the patina. I feel like my diamonds stand out more next to a more matte metal, and my ring is become more obviously platinum vs. one that could be mistaken for white gold.
bigger diamond.
i have platinum, and no one (except experts) even knows the difference between platinum/white gold on your finger. people only know it's platinum when i tell them.
but a bigger diamond is OBVIOUS.
I would go for the platinum. It's naturally white, which gets rid of the re-dipping issue, and it's much stronger. Personally, I would feel that my diamond is "safer" in a platinum setting than in a wg setting.
