Playing hooky?

notbridey:  I don’t think I’ve ever lied about being sick, but I’ve definitely had days where I exaggerate how sick I am (like, I have a cold which would allow me to work, but I’m exhausted so I say I’m too sick to go in) or I’ll extend my sick time if I’ve been out for a couple of days and I want one more to really get better.

I don’t think there’s anything terribly wrong with what you’re doing, since you are staying home and relaxing (being exhausted can actually increase the likliness you get sick). But I think pretending to be sick and, say, going to an amusement park is wrong.

Yes. I left work a half hour early yesterday because I had an appointment. Truth is, I wanted to get my nails done.

notbridey:  Yes, a few times. Mostly my days playing hooky are mental health days where I legitimately cannot face my desk for 8 hours without having an anxiety attack. So I’m not physically sick but when I get to be at home I feel much better that day and then have re-motivated for the rest of the week.

I will say that today I’m leaving an hour early to get a mani/pedi. 🙂

notbridey:  I have never faked sick to get out of work, but if I am sick and don’t feel well I may go home and baby myself because its easier and more relaxing to be on the couch than in front of my computer.

I will, however, take the whole day off even if I know I could only be gone half the day, but I am truthful about where I am going. I don’t know if that counts 🙂

Definitely. I allow myself to be “sick” once every few months or so. Now that I have a baby, it’s sort of a treasured treat to have a day where I can just drop her off at daycare and do whatever I want for an entire 8 hours without guilt or worry. Mentally, I need that from time to time!

notbridey:  I feel very fortuante to have a job where if I need to call out and give enough advance, it’s not that big of a deal. There are days where I wake up and can’t muster the strength to get out of bed. Other days I just have too much to do around the house and I’ll take a day off and get my house together. I’m the type of person if my house is cluttered, I feel cluttered!

Don’t feel guilty for taking a personal day. If you legitimately need the rest you should enjoy your day!

We don’t get sick time, so if we’re out, we have to use our own vacation time so can’t really play hooky.  I have taken some last minute day offs to work on the house, but it wasn’t busy at work so it’s not a big deal.

Yea my fiancee and I have a lot of experience playing hooky. We are not extremely happy with our jobs so that makes it easier to play hooky. We are hourly so we don’t get paid if we don’t show up. I know that we always work things out to get our bills paid so I don’t worry about that. I can’t wait to have a job/career that I actually want to wake up and do everyday! I know that happens for a lot of people, I’m just not sure if I will be that lucky!

No. If I want off “just because” I use vacation time.

Mine is “mental health days” it doesn’t happen often, but my job is extremely stressful (criminal defence lawyer) and sometimes I just need a day off, also if I am sick have a cold etc.. I will take the day off. I work for a very small firm and my boss is very nice about it, and I work hard when we need to and come in on the weekends if he have something going on so it all balances out.

I do it every once in a great moon. It’s usually if I’m particularly exhausted and absolutely need the extra sleep.

I won’t say I’ve never done it, but it’s rare. I feel guilty when I stay home when I’m actually sick!
