As the post title conveys, my budget is being nibbled away (okay, more like snarfed) by stupid chiavari chairs. Ugh. So please help me be okay with not using them!

Reason #1: I'll have to give up my cheese course to afford them... =(

Chivari chairs are beautiful, but by no means a must have. I had never even heard of them before I began planning my wedding (I have seen them/sat in them before, but never really paid attention to them). Guests are much more likely to be impressed by a delicious cheese course than by chairs. Plus, once everyone is seated, you won't even notice them in photographs.

Outside wedding...don't use them...not practical at all...

Inside wedding...they look great! in an EMPTY ROOM! Your family and friends won't care about the chairs...is only the brides that do. Save your money for a tasty dessert table...for the photographer...bigger cake...prime steak! Donate it to cancer research! do I really need to keep going???

     Down with chivaris!!!

I could not tell you what type of chairs I've sat in at any wedding I've attended.  I personally think they are a huge waste of money and one of those things that the wedding industry has come up with to make more money off of us.... feed people well and they'll have a good time!

Want vs. Need.  I want a marriage I don't need a wedding. It's that simple.

The only time I have noticed the chairs at a wedding is when they used standard ballroom/hotel chairs that were not covered. That being said, I do love chiavari chairs...but think standard chairs covered with a bow or something can look just as elegant. And really...chiavari vs. cheese? That's a clear decision in my mind! You don't need them!!! Trust me- because that money needs to be used elsewhere! (CHEESE!).

I went over budget by 100% due to wants vs. needs and not getting those straight through my head--- I rented 1k in glassware b/c I didn't "like" the stuff available at the place I held my reception.

ANd I mean I was planning on only spending 6500-7k on the wedding and we were over 12k... WTF??? I'm in grad school & hubby is a darn cop. We just don't have 6500 laying around. I mean we had to cut into rent money and had no honeymoon because I had way too many wants vs needs moments.

I am going through the same damn crisis and I literally still have to ask my FI and BMs to talk me out of it.  Those damn chivaris are so damn beautiful in pictures.  But as other posters said, I put myself back in time to those weddings I attended and I can't remember about 90% of the details there.  No chivaris, for you or for me!

Seriously, unless you fill your wedding album with a bunch of pictures of the empty room, you're never going to notice.  We are having our reception at our country club, a place I have eaten dozens and dozens of times.  When the event coordinator asked me if the chairs were okay, I had to look around the room!  I have spent days out of my life sitting in those chairs, and had no idea what they looked like!  I think that says it all.  Your guests will never notice the chairs unless they are terribly uncomfortable, or frighteningly wobbly.  Think about the last wedding you went to - or a restaurant you eat at often - what were/are the chairs like?  See?  You can't remember either.  Spend your money on something that people will remember.

Don't do it! Seriously, as a guest, unless you have plastic fold-out chairs (not that I am dissing those chairs if anyone is having them), I wouldn't notice. I prefer food over chairs, any day!

I had a non-wedding "please talk me out of buying this" moment today, and sadly FI egged me on instead of stopping me, so now I have 10 lbs of gummi bears from amazon... maybe I should've come here for help instead of asking him. So, if I were a guest at your wedding, I would love you forever on a cheese course alone. But then again, I am a cheese-whore. I vote for cheese over chairs!

Here's the thing- if guys are wearing suits, there's a good chance that they will put the suit jacket over the chair, eliminating any of the prettiness.

As a guest, I wouldn't remember what the chairs look like, but I definitely would remember cheese...

Thanks everyone! Ktbelle, I love analogies! And December, I am a complete cheese-whore too. =)

July2008bride, while I understand the intent of your response, we've kind of moved past the marriage vs. wedding question. Right now, we're having both a marriage and a wedding, and at a wedding, people need to sit if they're having a plated meal. However, just because we're having a beautiful wedding (sans chiavari chairs) does not mean I'm not thinking about our marriage! Please don't misunderstand where my priorities are at because I'm worried about the aesthetics of the reception.

I agree with the above. I wanted them for my wedding at first, but then I realized that except for the first minute or two when people are filing into the room and going "oooh" and "aaahh," those chairs are going to be covered up by people's BUTTS the whole night! Seriously, they're going to be in back of people, no one is going to see them. Not like the centerpieces or tablecloths, which people will be looking at all night, so spend your money on those!
