Apparently I have missed something major. I have no idea why I am supposed to hate DeBeers. YES, I could Google and do some research but I figured that y’all could educate me better than random websites.
I have seen several posts that mention DeBeers, and I am just confused about what DeBeers has done that is so awful? I’m guessing it has something to do with blood diamonds, etc, but don’t most major diamond sellers have something to do with supporting the blood diamond trade? I have never even seen a DeBeers store (although I have heard of it.) Someone please enlighten me.

Googled and found this article which explains it fairly well: http://www.commondreams.org/views/061200-102.htm

The issue is that they have cornered the dimaond market. Because they own most of the diamonds, they have a large influence. They keep piles of diamonds locked away to decrease the supply against the flat demand, therefore artificially pushing the price up. Basically, people hate them because if they just let the market go naturally, diamonds would be much cheaper. ALSO some people don’t like that their marketing a couple decades ago got people thinking that only a diamond is acceptable for an e-ring
ETA: They’re not like, a store, they supply diamonds to jewelers

Gotcha. Yeah, I ended up googling and then felt kinda stupid for posting since it was pretty obvious pretty quickly why people hate them.
Thanks for entertaining my stupid question! Haha.

i didn’t know about this until after SO and i went to DeBeers to try a couple on (not to buy from there of course, just for detail ideas for our custom made ring). and now i wish i could say their rings were not great… but even though they didn’t have a design i would have copied to a T, they did have some beautiful rings! damn it.

Well in fairness there’s not really anything such as an ‘ethical diamond’. They all have issues.

I think this comes up because of the resent moissy topics where people say they push people to buy diamonds only and spent 2 months worth of income

When was this information released though?
