Can you check at some of the art schools in the area and see if they have any students who need to add to their portfolio? They're not professional but I would think that would be better than nothing! I did this with our engagement photos and all it cost me was a $50 Target gift card. All of the photos aren't wonderful but I got some that are spectacular.
I was going to suggest the same thing...depending on were you are in NJ, NYC and Philly both have some very talented photog students.
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but unfortunately, I think you'll be hard pressed to find a professional photographer for less than $2,000. Especially if you want touch up on the pictures and prints. I too, had a very difficult time finding a photographer that didn't cost a fortune. One suggestion, is to contact a local art school or college and see if a photography major or recent grad might be willing to shoot your wedding. They may not be able to do the touch-ups or prints though....Good Luck!
There is a NY photographer Aaron Almendral who is under $1000- I met with him- he seems really great- he wasn't exactly what I was looking for but his work is really good.

Hi, I'm getting married July 25. My fiance and myself are paying for the entire wedding being that we both don't have parents. I am in school right now and working about 50 hours a week to pay for this wedding. We are minimizing costs as much as possible but still trying to have a beautiful wedding. I really want a professional photographer but I can't seem to find any under a $1000. I only need about 5 hours of coverage and I just want the photos they take on cd or in prints but with the rights given to me. And I need them to all be touched up too. I don't know maybe this is too much to ask for but I really want to have photos of my big day. Please Help
