Please help me choose a hair color for my wedding! : wedding hair hair color blonde brunette redhead Hair

I have no idea what to do with my hair color for my wedding in 2 months. I am naturally a light ash brown color that I haven't seen in years. I went blonde in high school and stayed blonde for about 8 years. I went brunette in Feb 2010 and it's been every shade from black to (accidentally) orange between then and now.

For the past few months I've been trying to get it to my natural color so I can leave it alone, but it keeps coming out very red (even when I've spent a lot of money having it professionally done. so frustrating!). The top 2 pics are the current color.

My natural color is very close to FI's hair color so you can see how much more red mine looks in comparison right now. FI HATES red hair and has told me that since way back when I was blonde, and I have never intentionally dyed it red, my hair just pulls red tones apparently. Even if it has a hint of red he doesn't like it. (He doesn't tell me I look bad, he just questions why the heck I keep dying my hair red when I know that is the one hair color he doesn't like!)

He keeps suggesting that I go back to blonde, but I really prefer how I look with brown hair now that I've seen it. Also, my sister hated when I dyed my hair blonde, because she said it looks fake/trashy/like a Barbie (especially combined with a tan, which I will most likely have for my July wedding). She keeps teling me I should absolutely NOT go back to blonde. Yes, my sister is a bit harsh, but I do agree that I look better with darker hair.

Ha, My FI is obsessed with red-heads.  I've dyed it reddish 2-3 times for him over the years but always come back to medium/dark blonde.  I'm naturally a dark blonde but dye it a little lighter to cover some early-onset gray.

I like your current color, but maybe throw in a couple blonder highlights?  It looks really good though!!

And of course, for non-natural blondes, isn't that quite a lot of upkeep??  The brown roots must show through so fast.  At least mine blend in for awhile.

@ItsPronounced_ABear: yes the upkeep is kind of terrible for me either way, which is why I wanted to go back to my natural. when I was blonde, I had a go-to box color that I could do myself and turned out great every time, so it was time-consuming but not too expensive.

when I went brunette, I got it done professionally the first time, and then tried to find a color I could DIY, but that's when every color started looking red/auburn. then I accidentally dyed it black and was scared to DIY after that. I've gotten it professionally done since then, and it's SO expensive to keep up with. but the pro is also the one who dyed it orange! I might as well just do it myself if they can't even get it the right color for $100 and 3 hrs in the salon. I have been to 2 different places and asked them to match my roots and neither one got it right.

You need to be careful with so much chemical on your hair, youre gonna kill it if you keep trying.

What about a middle ground of a dark ashy blonde? It may be easier to obtain than your natural hair color, and FI will like it because its blonde and it wont look as Barbie.

    @TheRookieYear: that is pretty!

I promise I really don't dye it very often! it's just been a lot of different shades over the past year because it turns out different every time. I would love to make it match my roots so I can leave it alone.

I've gone through the exact same hair issues as you. I'm naturally dark ashy blond, highlighed it for years then went through various shades of brown (which always ended up washing out to red)

For the past year I've made use of the 'grown out look' trend  to get back to my natural colour and am planning a few subtle highlights to brighten it up. Think Jennifer aniston.

I would look back at pictures of yourself and see which ones you like best and find a good hairdresser to work with you on getting there over a few months.

    Good luck!

@MissDareDevil: thank you! yes those are engagement pics. : )

should I just not worry about FI not liking the redness?? I just don't want him to hate my hair in all of our wedding pics! haha I know this sounds so silly but he brought it up yesterday and asked if I was leaving it red for the wedding and that made me worry about it.

Honestly I don't know how he can consider that red! It's brown, with some red in the sunlight but dyed brown hair will ALWAYS have red undertones unless you've gone into the plum undertone range in which case your hair would be super dark.

It's not like you are carrot top, I'm not sure what his concern is. And I'm sure he doesn't mean it this way, but it seems a little mean to be so adamant about it for wedding day. He should love you for you, regardless if you're brunette, blonde or bald!

@MissSawyer: haha I know! maybe he's colorblind? he also thinks a charcoal gray polo he has is brown. it's very possible he just has weird perception of colors and I should ignore his thoughts about my haircolor. ;)

imagine how you'll feel about your hair in 20 years looking at your pictures. I think you should try to go as natural as you can.

As a Hairstylist myself, I absolutely adore the top photos, particularly the top right one.  That colour looks amazing on your skin tone, I'd keep it for the wedding.  I do like the blonde as well, but I'd go a couple levels darker on that, as someone already suggested.  The thing with brown hair, it usually pulls red in sunlight, unless you are a lighter brown (as I am), then you're pulling gold/orange.

I say keep it, you look beautiful.

I personally like blonde on you the best. And I like red on you as well, but since your FI doesn't like it, it's out of discussion. I would just do low-lites and make it a hint darker at the roots, so when your own hair grows out it will be not as obvious.

And I feel you so much about the red hair. Mine does the same thing. I got it professionally dyed to dark blonde, after doing henna for a year. I had bleach on it for a total of about 5 hours. And it keeps turning bright orange after several washes :(( My wedding is in July and I don't want to have orange hair on my wedding day, neither I wanna ruin my hair trying to bleach it more.

So pretty much your wedding hair color depends on what you are able to achieve in terms of color without ruining your hair quality by your wedding day.

@Fegele: ahh it's so frustrating when you spend so much time and it doesn't turn out the color you are aiming for! I feel your pain. good luck getting yours to cooperate by your wedding day. I hope neither of us end up with orange hair in July! :)

I'm in the same boat as you! I'm naturally a brunette but like myself lighter.. what I think I'm going to do is go brunette with some blonde/caramel highlights...that way I get the best of both worlds!
