I think since you’re doing 7pm ceremony you are at the time mark where you can just squeak by with doing apps.  Though I usually eat dinner around 7, I think a lot of people eat earlier so I don’t think you have to serve dinner in this case.  I would do the heavy apps though, if I were you.  (I will say, if the lower cost buffet isn’t much more expensive then I would do that.)

Make sure you put in your invitations that “there will be a reception to follow with appetizers and cake.”

Unless you go the DIY route for appetizers from Costco, which will be stressful to you and whomever gets kitchen duty won’t be able to enjoy the ceremony or reception like everyone else, caterers generally charge more for appetizers. Considering the time, you will have to serve at least 15 pieces per person minimum which is the equivalent of a full meal (a plated meal is 5-7 appetizers and folks usually go home hungry since they don’t get enough to eat) and if someone goes home starving, that is their own fault. The cheaper buffet will give you more for your money and guests will go home stuffed.

Be aware that alcohol (even basic beer and wine) will drive up the costs no matter which type of menu you pick.

Can you go with a more expensive buffet and just serve beer and wine and non-alcoholic beverages? I’m with Ember78 – that liquor bill is usually a big one. More food, less alcohol–that’s my vote.

As a guest I would prefer one of the buffets because Im a picky eater and they offer more familiar options.

I truly feel that people are coming to your wedding to see you married, and visit and be happy.  Your family and friends will understand that you are going through a rough time but still wanted them to come.  I think that the first appetizer menu would be perfectly fine!  Think of how many people just do backyard BBQ’s and it is totally acceptable!!! Go for it and if people don’t like it they are just rude!

How many appetizers would it be?  Sometimes caterers do better than others at them.  I’ve been to some weddings where I only got 1 of the passed apps, maybe 1 of each kind.  Are you allowed to bring any food in?  Some of those cold apps would probably be cheaper to just do yourself.

Oh wow, that stinks.   So you can’t even use their caterer but add to what they provide? What’s the price diff pp between all the options and how many people are you having?

I’d go with 2 or 3.  2 has more variety but I’d just be worried about quantity of apps that they’re assuming per person, 3 has less variety but if they’re saying it’s a buffet dinner then there should be plenty for everyone.  I think apps can be more social though.

I’d vote number 3.  With it being that late in the evening and semi-formal, I think you need something a bit more substantial for a meal (which the cheaper buffet provides).  Although you can fill up with heavy apps, I don’t think options 1 or 2 really give you enough variety for people to have a meal.

I voted for #3 because as a guest, I would expect some kind of dinner, and not just appetizers… especially at that time on a Friday night at a “semi-formal” event.  I usually eat dinner around 7:30-8, but that’s just me.
