OK I have spent days googling and tripadvisoring but I am having the hardest time finding what I am looking for!! Will you bees please help me find the luxurious vacation spot my fiance and I have been picturing in our imaginations??
Here are the mandatory criteria:
– Must have white sands & turquoise water.
– Must be a luxurious 5-star quality resort with a spa, restaurants that can impress even the most discerning foodies, and up-to-date accomodations. I’m picky about shabby looking accomodations. Especially the bathroom!! The bathroom must be nice. AND FTW we’d like the room to be beachfront on the ground level with immediate access to the beach.
– Must have low crime. I want to feel at ease and safe.
The next two criteria are debatable–willing to be flexible on these:
– Preferably somewhere where the majority of people speak English. For example, I’m not sure if I’d feel comfortable in Bali or Greece just because I’d be worried I won’t be able to communicate.
– Preferably somewhere that’s convenient to get to from the US east coast. For example, Bahamas or Jamaica are preferable to Hawaii.
Here’s a picture of what we have in mind:

- Wedding: January 2013 - Harbourfront Grand Hall
beeconomist: Jamaica has a bad reputation according to my family for crime that is decades old. I looked into ClubHotel Riu Negril which was on some CNN Travel list of the best budget resorts.

Knowing your budget would be helpful.
I’d stay away from Jamaica. I’ve heard pretty bad things about the crime and lack of hospitality. Other caribbean islands like St. Lucia, Aruba, Antigua, The Grenadines, etc. might be a better idea.
ETA: If money is no object, check out Jumby Bay in Antigua/St. John: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g147243-d148078-Reviews-Rosewood_Jumby_Bay-St_John_s_Saint_John_Parish_Antigua_Antigua_and_Barbuda.html
Or Jade Mountain St. Lucia: http://www.jademountain.com/

- Wedding: November 2013 - St. Augustine Beach, FL
beeconomist: St. Martin./St. Maarten would be my best recommendation. The island is beautiful and clean compared to other Caribbean islands I have been too. My recommendation would be for La Petit Hotel on the French side of the island.

You literally described the place I’m going to have my wedding! Anguilla, British West Indies. Super close to St. Martin but less tourists, better (in my opinion) and quiter beaches. Five star resorts with impeccable food and spas. Where we are getting married (Cap Juluca), you walk onto a private beach only for hotel guests (population: 10, literally). You get wifi on the beach with sorbet delivered to your beach chair every afternoon! Viceroy is much more modern in style with great ammenities but the beach is not as nice as Maunday’s Bay where Cap Juluca is located. 🙂
I should mention that you would need a “skies the limit budget” to really enjoy Anguilla. This little island is a destination spot for celebrities as no photographers are ever around!

mumkin: I just looked at those two resorts and they are unavailable in October, after our wedding. I wonder if they close down for a period of time?

klablo7: Yup, I believe most places on the island are closed between Sept-Oct due to hurricane season!

Take a look at Jade Mountain in St. Lucia! I have stayed there twice before and it is amazing!!! Also another suggestion is Fowl Cay Resort in the Bahamas. I was there in August and it was great!! Beaches are unbelievable!!!

Mauritius!!! It’s a very long way away but if the sky’s the limit why not?! My husband is from here and we’ve just moved here for a couple of years. There are some amazing hotels.

beachbride1216: Le Petit Hotel is one of my favorite hotels! Def my favorite one in St. Martin.
We go to St. Martin a couple times a year for long weekend trips and Le Petit is good proximity to restaurants in Grand Case and the beach is.. ok. There is no spa at all nor is it very luxurious. The only truly luxurious place to stay in St. Martin are private villas.
I disagree with a PP saying St. Martin is filled with tourists, if you steer good and clear of the Dutch side (and Orient beach) its hardly noticeable. Just don’t go into Marigot when the cruise ships dock, its disgusting.
I would recommend St. Barths over St. Martin and Anguilla for a luxurious spa resort. Check out Hotel Guanahani and spa, Eden Rock, or Hotel St. Barth Isle de France.. they’re all wonderful. St. Barths is a smaller and a little quieter. I like the restaurants and nightlife there.
Alternately, what about the Maldives? That’s where we’ve chosen and it hits all the marks.. luxurious, spa, and you can’t beat an overwater bungalow!
