its hard to find a place that will let you take photos but you can always sneak some, just turn off your flash.
I would try RK bridal they have a HUGE selection and you do not need to call in for an appointment they have a first come first serve sign in sheet and they have BM dresses on the other side so you can do two things at once.

I second RK Bridal. Just make sure to get there early on the weekends - like as soon as they open! But I bought my dress there and it was definitely under $1k. Plus their alterations (if you do it there) are capped at $350, which I appreciated as a bride trying to lose those extra pounds!
I got my dress at RK bridal and love it -- really tasteful and elegant and only $610! They have a great variety of styles and prices. However, based on my experience, it will be impossible to take photographs. RK also has b-maids dresses. I arrived with photos from magazines of dresses I liked, and one of the girls who works there directed me either to that dress (if they had it) or to dresses that were very similar. Good luck! And have fun!
Thanks for the recommendation - it was exactly the type of place I was looking for!
why not try kleinfeld, they have sample sales once a month; Im going there I have a $500 discount; sample sales on designer dresses are as low as 800
I got mine from Jenny Yoo (jennyyoo.com) for under $900 and it is AWESOME. I would recommend 100%, definitely... I loved my experience there. You can take pictures (don't have to sneak) and the showroom is really nice (with flattering lighting which is a plus!) :)
Check out the website because many of her designs are online. Click on "wedding alternatives" -- don't be put off by that tag though. I don't know why they are called "alternatives."
I got my dress from kimera on Atlantic Ave. in Brooklyn. Great if you want something a little different than a normal wedding gown.
Kimera.com
I got a short dress with a lace top and silk skirt with an organza overlay. And reasonable prices, plus she makes the dresses so no extra for alterations!
I also loved Jenny Yoo. I don't think you can take photos at RK Bridal. I'm sure you could sneak some if you really wanted to since you usually share your consultant with at least one other bride (unlike Kleinfeld, where your consultant is attached to you.) You can definitely find dresses for under $1000 at both of the places.
Just saw this on the Jenny Yoo website....

I live in NYC but actually decided to go to Long Island because I'd heard of an amazing shop - Fantasia Bridal. It's out on Long Island in Rocky Point. I must say, I had the best experience and bought my dress and veil from them. Alicia is the girl I dealt with and their seamstress is amazing with beadwork.
I wound up buying my dress at Kleinfeld 599 sample sale, the alterations are going to kill me
I loved bridal garden these are samples donated by designers from their fashion collectiosn I fell in love with one that was 699 it was gorgeous; but I'm happy with what I have right now

I have been putting off shopping for my wedding dress for a really long time, but have got to get started and don't know where to start! Any recommendations based on the criteria below? I am flexible about traveling anywhere in the NYC area.
I'm looking for a store which:
In the alternative, any places that are great for trying bridesmaid dresses and will let you order them in white or ivory?
Thanks!
