Ah just going from experience.. my SIL loves colour and decided to paint several of her walls various colours. The colours are nice, its just the way they go together is totally wrong. Like if you could think of the worst colours to go together, she did it. So I am just saying there is a fine line in choosing colours that are complimentry together.
Do you have any pics of the space? That would give us more of an idea of what your working with.
I've used that bright yelow color before, and in some lights/times of day/seasons/furniture combos it can be really harsh. I'm afriad a very cool color (most purples and blues) would not pair well--a little circus tenty.
If you're really wanting a bluish shade I would go with something a softer shade and maybe use a pattern or something else to snaz it up.

LIke a cool stripe pattern with slightly different shades.

These colors apparently go with anything....if you really must use a dark color, I'd do a chair rail and put the dark color only on the bottom and something softer on top.
@kerensa: I don't think there is anything wrong with having two bright colors, but I would make sure they have the same undertones.
For example, if it is warm color yellow, then you want to do a warmer purple (not one with blue undertones... they would really clash). An eggplant color is an example of a purple with warm undertones.
I would definitely get a sample of the paint you like and see what the two colors look like together.
Also, I would make sure you have some neutral colored furniture and curtains (white, cream, or tan depending on the shades of paint you have). Don't go too bold with patterns and colors when your walls are already bold!
Just my two cents. ;)
I agree, I think it depends on the shades of it and also are the two rooms open to each other? Like when you're standing in the L/R can you see the Dining Room?
We are painting all our bedrooms a different color but they are all soft soothing colors and there will never be a space where you can see all four colors together.
In our main living area the kitchen, dining room and living room are all one open space so we are going to have the wall that is continuous from d/r to kitchen be a accent color that pops. There is the fireplace which the entire wall will be some kind of stone TBD and all other walls will be white. You don't want too much color imo so that everything is competing.

thanks everyone for the advice so far. the yellow living room is open to the dining room, and they share one wall (there is a slight separation in the form of natural wood trim). see picture above.
If I were you and you were set on painting another color in the dining room I would only do the window wall. That way the wall adjacent to the yellow in the lr would serve as a visual break. Otherwise I think it might be too much esp because your yellow looks really bright as well.
I think the best way to make a transition from yellow to purple is to maybe find some wallpaper that ties the two colors together for the dining room. If you can add a chair rail and paint below it purple and above it wallpaper with both colors, that might work really well.
@moderndaisy: we actually do have a chair rail. we removed the terrible wallpaper and i was thinking of maybe a classy stencil pattern? as a transition.
@kerensa: That sounds lovely! That's exactly what I'm going to do in our entryway - the chair rail is already there and I'm going to remove the wallpaper and stencil in colors that compliment the living room.

We painted our living room a sunshine-y yellow (benjamin moore yellow lotus). I want to paint the dining room next door a purple or blue color. I'm thinking of Ben Moore's Blue Nova which is an inky blue/purple. Both rooms get a lot of light.
Will it seem too bright or bold to have two walls with strong colors next to each other? I love color but don't want to live in a crayola box.
