We are having a 10:00 a.m. church mass followed by 1 p.m appetizer and 2 p.m. late lunch afternoon outdoor reception … The 2 p.m. in LA in August will be hot! Will a 5 p.m. reception be too late from a 10 a.m. Mass? Dilemma …..

5 pm would be too late. If the Mass is an hour, hour and a half, that’s only 11:30 am. What are people going to do for 5 1/2 hours?
Maybe rethink the outdoor reception if it’s not going to work with your timetable. I would find it very hard to be dressed up and sitting in the August sun

I know this sounds goofy, but I’ve read several times over that around 5:00 pm is actually the hottest time of the day, even though the sun’s rays are at their strongest at 12:00. So, you’re more likely to get sunburned at 12:00 (does your outdoor reception have cover?) but it’ll likely actually be hotter at 5:00 pm.
Obviously, there are exceptions to any rule, but it’s probably worth considering.

To be honest, I would look at other options. It’s not considerate to your guests to make them wait all dressed up in between even for your initial plan, heat or no heat.
