I am losing my MIND!
My husband recently went back to school online (Kaplan) and his financial aid paperwork has been a total nightmare.
He enrolled/applied for financial aid over the summer (before we were married). Everything was fine. Then in September, we got married. And right before school started (in November), he found out that he was going to owe, like $800 every 8 weeks in tuition.
Because apparently him making a whopping $25K per year means he doesn’t qualify for financial aid.
So the woman at the financial aid office for the school told him to change his FAFSA and include me and let them know we recently got married.
So he changed it and included my info and income (which is around $25K too).
Ever since then, it’s been a complete nightmare.
Every person he talks to tells him something different – some people are saying he can’t change the FAFSA application even though we got married. Other people are telling him it’s perfectly fine.
Some people are saying that he will owe this $800 some dollars every 2 months. Others say he won’t owe anything until he graduates.
Here’s the thing: We can NOT afford anywhere NEAR that much money …. even if it were, like, twice a year. That’s why he needs financial aid – because we don’t make enough money. That’s why he’s going back to school – so he can get a better job!
And anyway ….. of all my friends, relatives, and co-workers from varying financial backgrounds and attending various schools, NO ONE has EVER had to pay ANY money for school while they were enrolled, unless it was for books or supplies or whatever.
I never had to deal with this since I only attended a community college for a few semesters and my grandfather graciously paid.
So ….. what the hell are we supposed to do?
If he owes this money every 2 months, he is going to have to quit school. There’s no way we can afford $4800 a year ! NO WAY!
Help! I’m stressing! (and my husband is supposed to be concentrating on school, NOT FAFSA BS)!!!
