I found a great little princess cut diamond solitaire ring in a size 4.25 and it arrived today. I love it and need to get it sized up to a 6.5. I went to my jewelers who said, according to his books/rates, it would cost $750 to resize it up two sizes (he said he would have to add platinum to the shank, which I do understand, but I was hoping they could just stretch it, like they have with my gold jewelry). Do any of you ladies know much about platinum? Does it cost THIS much to resize up? The ring is valued at about $1000 so it doesn’t make sense to me. If I can’t resize it, I will need to just wear it as a pinky ring since I could afford to get it resized to my pinky. Thanks so much in advance for any advice!

He’s full of shit. I had a thick platinum ring sized up and it was about $150!!

That sounds crazy!! They may need to add some to make it bigger, but we’re talkign about tiiiiiiiny piece since 2 size is only like a mm – 1.5 mm in metal. I’d believe like a $50-$100 charge, but $750 is highway robbery, esp if your entire sz 4.5 ring is 1k.

@Mrs.Lotus: my husbands ring is platinum. & yes, they are totally overcharging.
Get a second opinion. Where did you go? I remember tiffany’s saying it was $75 to go up a size for his. we just ended up ordering his size rather than buying the one at the store and getting it resized.
but, def. get a 2nd opinion.
btw, that was for a 6mm (very thick ring) so yea, should def. be less.

Thanks ladies. I love my jeweler and he’s done amazing work but I actually spoke to his apprentice, who has been there for 15 years, b/c my jeweler was with another client, and it was the end of the day. I realize it costs more to add platinum but $750!!! WTF?
Ok…I will calm down and go to another jeweler tomorrow and ask. I just don’t want to go to a chain store and do know of one other independent jeweler I will ask. Thank you again!!! Love the ladies on here!

Oh, and I bought this ring from Rubylane.com (vintage website) and bought it b/c I expected to pay to get it resized but not $750! I mean I realize platinum is a different metal, of course, then gold but I thought it could be stretched. It’s such a cute ring and I bought it for my right hand, as a xmas gift to myself from hubby. 🙂 I’m keeping my fingers crossed I can find someone to resize for a reasonable amount!

That sounds like a lot… We only paid 800 for my FI’s 5mm wedding band in platinum, size 9. I’m sure he can’t be adding that much platinum…

I sized up my platinum Tiffany e-ring and it was $150 I think. They’re overcharging you big time.

Lol what Blingbling said….
I had my ring sized down twice for free (I guess paid in the price of the custom ring) It still wasn’t right so they sized it up one and added platinum beads to stop it swiveling.
They charged cost price to them which was £65

UPDATE: Thanks so much ladies! I went to one other jeweler who said it would be $220/ready by 12/31 and then went to my old jeweler who I hadn’t gone to in years b/c of distance and they only charged me $70 and it was ready in two days!!! I picked it up today and am so happy! Thanks so much for your help b/c I would have probably sent the ring back if I hadn’t come on here for your words of wisdom! 🙂
