if it’s a close relation on your dad’s side i’d say you have to invite them if your dad says so, and keep hoping that the long drive will keep them from coming. another option if they’re more distant relatives (like your dads cousins) is to just invite the parents.

can you use space restraints as an excuse? im all about that excuse but it only works if it’s true (or at least believable). Six kids is a lot of extra guests/ space.

are they really oblivious to the fact that have the most horrid kids on the planet?

I’d go with piperbenjamin, space restirction and cost for that matter is a good excuse. And then pray to the God of everything holy they don’t take the 4 hour drive for free food!

If you do invite the parents only, & they actually show up without their kids, and they get mad, to help spare their feelings you could always tell them you meant for their kids were invited, you’re so sorry they didnt bring them. of course you’d be lying but then again, noone’s feelings would be hurt? On another note, they probably (hopefully?) wouldnt complain to YOU on your wedding day, so have your mom/ dad/ whoever ready with an explanation too.

Though usually an etiquette snob, I am going to stray from Ms. Post and cheer on Piper’s suggestion!  I also like the space restraints ("we only invited the children we knew really well," or "kids of nuclear family and aunts/uncles only").  I don’t know – sounds like a horrible situation.  Kids room at the venue with well tipped nannies?!  Good luck.  When the day is over, even if they throw beans at you, you will still have just married the person of your dreams.
