…or tell me I am in idiot. I am soooo mad at myself and keep kicking myself for being so dumb. Yesterday I was about to take my prenatal vitamin (I am 12 weeks) and for some reason I glanced at the label and I saw that I am supposed to be taking two vitamins a day and I have been only been taking one!! I started taking prenatals in April of this year when my ob told me I should at my annual visit. When I started taking them, I knew I was supposed to be taking two a day so I was, but at some point I had a MASSIVE brain fart and started only taking one. I don’t know what happened. I don’t understand how I can be so dumb. Do you think I put my baby at any type of risk? My diet hasn’t been perfect but it hasn’t been horrible either. We pretty much always eat at home and I always start my day with a good breakfast. I also make sure I have fruit and I try to eat a lot of yogurt too. I just can’t get past this and I feel so terrible. I feel like I let down my husband and my baby. We have my next appt next week so I am definitely going to bring this up to the doctor. I hope she doesn’t get mad at me.
Sorry this is so long if you actually read the whole thing. But do you think I put my baby at any risk? Should I be panicking? Any advice or words of encouragement would be greatly appreciated.

you’re really worrying over nothing! a prenatal vitamin isn’t a MUST, but it’s a good thing, so even if you’ve only been taking half the recommended dose you’re in good shape. your baby is NOT at any risk.
maybe you should switch to a once a day vitamin? that’s what mine is (cvs brand).

@iHeartTwinkies: First of all, you are NOT dumb. You simply forgot and made a mistake, no need to put yourself down or become overwhelmed with guilt. Just start taking two, and mention it to your doctor. I’m sure she will tell you that it isn’t a big deal. Plenty of healthy, strong, beautiful babies are born to women who lack basic things like clean water and fresh food, who have never seen a doctor for prenatal care. You are taking so many steps to provide a good home for your baby while it grows inside of you, and this won’t change any of that.

You need to stop beating yourself up! There are plenty of healthy babies who are born to mothers who smoke/drink/whatever before they even realize they are pregnant. I’m sure your baby will be fine! I can’t imagine your doctor being “mad” at you! You just had mom-nesia – it happens.

I agree with the other posters, please don’t beat yourself up. The fact that you were taking any sort of supplement before you got pregnant and continued to once you were pregnant is great and puts you ahead of a lot of people. Plus, you mentioned that you knew at the beginning that the dosage was for 2 vitamins and that somewhere along the way you got mixed up, so you haven’t been doing it the whole time. Just start taking 2 today and you will be good to go. I’m pretty sure that most of us have forgotten to take our vitamins a time or two.

LOL oh the mommy guilt is already starting on you isn’t it! Welcome to the next 18 years of your life! hehe. Anyways the prenatals are actually more for YOU then the baby. The baby will just take anything it needs from your body. The vitamins are to keep yourself stocked on what your own body needs. Not the babys body.
Can you keep a little secret?? In my first pregnancy I skipped taking my vitamins all together. I would not suggest this BUT nothing happened to me that was the cause of not taking my vitamins. Don’t worry your fine!

Thanks ladies, you are definitely helping me feel better. I will try not to be so hard on myself (although that is a lifelong habit that is hard to break). It was just disappointing yesterday when I realized what I did. I have been trying so hard to do the very best for our baby and I couldn’t believe that I overlooked something that seems so obvious. But y’all are right, one is better than none. I just wish I could remember when I stopped taking two a day, but I do know it was before we found out that we are pregnant because I would have remembered to take two then. Thanks for your words of encouragement, they have helped this expectant worrywart!

Prenatal vitamins are GIGANTIC. I’m not suprised you didn’t know to take two of those horse pills. A lot of women do not take them or start taking them very late. I would not worry at all. At only 12 weeks, your baby still has plenty of time to get what it needs. Oh and Congrats!

Everything will be fine!
Truthfully I barely took prenatals during my first 18 or so weeks. I got sick one day off it and was just lazy about finding another option. Boy was I sweating the 20 week ultrasound crossing my fingers I hadn’t caused any harm. All was just fine and our 5 month old is perfect!
Even now I don’t take them everyday (and I should because I’m breastfeeding!). I have moments of feeling guilty but they pass quickly and I just try to remember to take it! 🙂

I also ended up barely taking my prenatals during my first trimester since I was so sick, and while my OB said to try to take them whenever possible (even if it was just Flintstons gummies if that was all I could handle), she definitely didn’t yell at me. Try not to worry about it too much!

I didnt know you were suppose to take two! Now I feel dumb! My 1st (and only) pregnancy I was told to take one at night because they made me really sick. I dont know what I would have done if I had to take two. I would have been puking all day!

Aww dont worry! Like people are saying it isnt a MUST. Its a great idea to take them to get all the nutrients you need. But I hear most people take one so now you are going to make me look at my bottle when I get home. lol
Im sure you will have a healthy happy baby vits or 1/2 vits!

Deep breath….relax. You are not dumb, an idiot or a failure nor do I feel you made any mistake! NOT ALL prenatal vitamins require you to take 2 a day, mine doesn’t. Once a day is probably sufficient anyways and you are getting something out of it!
