I just got an email & there's a website called spokeo.com & I went there & I thought it was pretty creepy. It had info on me that I don't want online. So thought I'd share with you bees. It won't let you see everything unless you have a subscription (pay) so I'm not sure what else it would've said about me if I paid for it. Just search for your name & it'll have your info in there. Creepy.

    The email:

FYI EVERYONE- There's a site called spokeo.com and it's an online phone book that has a picture of your house, credit score, profession, age, how many people live in the house, etc. First copy the URL address from your browser once you find your listing. Remove yourself by clicking the Privacy link on the bottom right, and inserting the URL you copied and your e mail addy. Follow the further instructions in the e mail that will be sent to you to remove yourself. I personally checked it out and it is really there!! PLEASE FORWARD to your freinds.

EDIT: DON'T SIGN UP FOR THIS, IT IS A SCAM! If you pay for the membership they charge your credit card a TON of $$$.

Even creepier, apparently, they have a limit to the number of privacy requests they will process each day. I received the following error message when trying to remove my information "In order to prevent abuse, we must limit the frequency of privacy requests. Please try again tomorrow."

@labbit - Most of the info for me is wrong as well, but I still don't like that it's there, and I definitely don't like that it won't let me remove it!

Also make sure you search for your email address as well on Spokeo. There may be a second profile which is linked to your email alone.

I asked to be removed for the page which referenced my name only, but when i searched under my email address a whole new page came up.

Man, I am really pissed now.

I looked at this too and it does look sort of like a scam. It had my address but none of the other information on the search is correct. I checked a bunch of names and none of them were.

I had to put in my email address to get them to take it off. I'll let you know if I get spammed by that.

I also edited my original posting thanks @MsCaniche letting people know not to sign up cause its a scam.

    It's actually funny!

Apparently, my home (I don't own one) is worth 400-600K, but I don't make that much income (I'm a clerical worker, apparently), I am in my late 20s (wrong), Caucasian (nope) and have lived in my "home" for 34yrs! Oh, and I have kids.

I looked up my mom and it had TONS of information on her. It gave her name, age occupation and street name among other things. She is the only person that lives on that street in the entire town (they own a farm and the whole street is their home and property)

She works at a prison as a Nurse and a lot of the inmates do not like her. Doesn't this put her in danger???

    How is this legal???

For those who didn't go through to read the Snopes article, here are their main conclusions:

    • The data on the site is aggregated from publically available sources. For example, you can look up the name of who owns any house because this information is in public records (which are often on the Internet).
    • If you ask spokeo to remove the content from their site it will still be available from whatever site they got it from that is in the public domain. Snopes likened this to a giant game of whack-a-mole.
    • Snopes was never successful in getting any information removed from the site.
    • Some speculate that the primary purpose of the website is to get your email address and presumably then your money.

I would just stay far away from this site. It seems very suspicious.

They have me, my parents, and FI's parents (but not FI).  Some info is just wrong, but some is correct and not the sort of thing I want a stranger to have.  I requested to have my profile removed and it took two seconds.  Now when you search my name I don't show up on the site.

Lolz.  It had an address that I lived at in high school and my parents address.  One place said I was mid 20's and one place said late 50's, both said I was a black woman....probably type casting me since my name is Chantel.

I did like how it said at my parent's address "likes retail shopping" for what I guess is my mother.  So true.

    Creepy.

Apparently, my mother is only 30 and she is my child... even though I'm 22. I definitely took myself out of their database. They have FI listed as in his 60s, he is also FFIL's dad. Apparently the house that FMIL just passed away in is worth $1M+, although in reality it's worth >$100k.

There is no listing for me - guess I don't exist.  There are two for my FI.  In one he is single and in one he is married!  He also lives in both PA and CA and has children...clearly we need to talk!  I kid, I kid...who knows where they get this stuff from!

i actually created a fake hotmail account to request getting removed from teh site - there wasnt a whole lot of information on me on there - and all of it was wrong, but either way *shrugs*

they did remove the listing that was up under my name - so the removal works. i created the fake account to request it just in case it was a scam and all they were trying to do was get my email account linked to my name :)

oh and if you search your email all it does is pull your computer location from your IP addresss and puts that as the location of the email. fyi.

They didn't know sh*t about me.  In fact, my new name didn't even come up as me, it was someone else.  And my old name had barely anything on it - just my city and street, which anyone could get from an online phone book.  Keep your facebook profiles private at all times and search engines like these could never pull that info!

Very weird.  It's definitely not very accurate.  Why waste the time developing a site like this when the information isn't even reliable?  Definitely a giant scam.

The pictures aren't of me.  It says my hobbies are: Outdoors, Travel, Reading, Gardening.  The only one of those that I really enjoy is traveling.  I like to read, but I don't consider it a hobby.  I'm not outdoorsy unless I'm at the beach, and gardening scares me.

It also says I have kids (wrong) and that I play sports. HA.

Going back to what a previous post said about the Snopes article...

As far as I can tell, nothing this site is doing is actually illegal.  The images and information it pulls from is either of public record OR voluntarily offered via a Facebook or Myspace acocunt - which if you read the fine print, both of those sites can give out anything you post on them.  Also, if you own a home it is public record.  Some counties are removing the financial details from their websites, but most post the details of your mortgage as well.

Right now, if you really wanted to find me, a little bit of Internet research would not only give you my address, legal name and phone number - but a photo of the front of my home with both my and my fiancees vehicles (showing license plate numbers) in our driveway.  None of this is pulled from my Facebook account either... it's just my public records.

I know that when you see everything pulled together at once, it sounds and seems scary, but so much information is legally public that almost anyone can track people down these days.

Online info that it pulled for me?  Facebook, Twitter (you can read my tweets right there on the screen) photos on Picasa, anything from Google (thank you, Buzz), LinkedIn, Pandora, Target, Photobucket, Blogger, Yelp!, Youtube, and Amazon.

I don't think there is any real way to protect yourself from being outed online - which is a big part of why I don't worry about leaving my face in blog photos, etc on Wedding Bee.
