Hi Bees - please say a prayer for my silky terrier Toby.  He is in my avatar picture. He ate a playing card on Saturday, and since then has thrown up about 10 times, and isn't really eating anymore.  He is going to the vet today for some XRays, as they think he may have an intestinal blockage. If so, he might require surgery.

He is our baby.  FI is in Texas for work until the end of May, so I am doing this alone.

    Thanks for your prayers!

Oh, the poor baby.  A playing card?!  Oh no.  He will be fine.  If surgery, it's all for the best to help the little guy out.  I will definitely send prayers for Toby and you!

Poor little dude. I hope he just managed to irritate his GI tract, rather than being totally blocked. Let us know what happens!

Oh no! I will pray for your pup. I always feel so sad when pets are sick because they can't talk and tell us how they feel. Stay strong!

To those of you who took the time to send me your warm thoughts, I wanted to update you. Toby somehow ate a MAGNET, and it has lodged itself into his stomach, and is blocking the "outflow" which is causing the regurgitation. He is having surgery tonight, and hopefully I can pick him up tomorrow or Wednesday. Please continue to pray for my little boy.

Oh goodness.  I know how horrible it feels.  My Ellie was in doggie ICU last summer d/t complications from an infected salivary gland.  Lots of prayers from the gang and I here in Chicago!!!!!

I'm sure he will be okay with the proper vet care.

It must be terrible to have that happen.

My dog has eaten an elastic band, a sock, and a shoe lace, all of which he luckilly managed to pass out one end or the other :P  The only thing I knew he ate was a shoe lace and I was freaking out!  A couple days later we found fibers in his droppings.  PHEW!

Poor thing.  That's so sad that he has a blockage.  We had to keep all our Christmas ornaments high on the tree to keep our dogs from eating them because once she ate a bunch of lights.

I'm praying for your little guy...my thoughts are with you and hang in there.  I know how scary it is when your dog has to go in for any kind of surgery.  It is the worst because they can't tell you how they feel.  I am sure it will work out and I will be thinking of you.

While it's a bummer that he has to go to surgery, I'm glad the x-rays were definitive. A lot of times, x-rays are suggestive but not definitive, so there's a wait-and-see period before surgery. And as far as surgeries go, a gastrostomy (cutting a hole in the stomach to remove something) isn't terribly technically challenging. His belly will be shaved and he'll have a fairly big incision (probably going along his entire belly), but he should be feeling better within a couple of days. And he might even be feeling so good that making him follow post-op rest instructions will be tricky! Your vet will probably recommend this, but if not, make sure you ask them about post-op pain medication and whether they'd suggest something like sucralfate (coats the stomach and protects it from acid while it heals) or pepcid (alters the acidity of the stomach - again, for healing).

@redherring -- thanks so much for the insight. She briefly explained the procedure, but she wanted to hurry. At first she was worried about the x Ray being definitive -- they thought he had something caught in his esophagus. She was grateful it was something noticeable. I asked about his recovery, and she did mention an anti-biotic and a pain medicine, so I'll make sure. Thank you all. I appreciate your thoughts. Fi is out of town until next month, so I feel a little less lonely now.

Awww, poor little guy. Hope he has a speedy recovery!

@RedHerring, every time someone has an animal concern I look for your post and you are ALWAYS there for the Hive. You're awesome! I'm halfway into vet school right now, so your responses make me feel like I am learning and not just 100% avoiding studying. :)

The vet called last night and his surgery went well.  It wasn't a magnet like we thought, it was a rubber bouncy ball.  LOL.  He is recuperating well, and has staples all the way down the length of his stomach.  He is currently wearing a collar to keep him from licking the staples.

I get to pick him up tomorrow afternoon.  I can't wait to see him.  Is there anything you can think of to buy to make his recovery a little more comfortable?

After Ellie came home from doggie ICU, I got her a Frosty Paws ice cream cup.  She got lots of attention and also lots of kisses.  I'm so glad Toby is doing well.

@katerrific - Thank you :) Good luck with vet school!

@Lindsay12.31.2010 - I'm glad his surgery went well. And I agree with Melissabegins - you being there will be enough, especially if you're around, watching him, and can take off his E-collar :) I suspect he'll be feeling much better in no time at all. Just make sure he can't get at his incision and chew out his staples!
