To be completely honest our first look was one of the most special moments of our wedding. Not that walking down the aisle wasn’t special too, but to have tgat moment with DH in private was magical. We’re both introverts and the nerves for the wedding were killing me so to get wrapper up in his arms was the best thing ever. We were both a lot more relaxed after it! The twin bonuses are that we have some epic photos… and the weather started to turn during our ceremony so we were lucky to get photos done first!  The sweet thing is my dad joined us at our second and final photo spot so that we could make the journey to the venue together, that was really special too.

I know that items a hugely personal decision but I would highly recommend doing a first look!

What we did was, first the photographer took me to the suite where DH and the groomsmen were getting ready (which was at the venue) and had us each on one side of the open door so we could hold hands but not actually see each other. Then, he took us outside separately and had DH wait for me with his back turned. There are several photos of us standing back to back and then he had us turn around so we could finally see each other. It was awesome–all the anticipation had been building and the looks on our faces at that moment were priceless. The best photos from our wedding came from the first look; not only can you see the emotion (DH was crying and I was grinning ear to ear) but the weather was gorgeous and the wind made my long veil do some pretty cool things. Plus, it was so nice to be able to spend a little time together alone before the ceremony. I love those pictures and I’m so glad we did them because those are the ones that we’ll end up framing.

our first look was great.  i don’t think our photographer had heard of it before.  he adored it.  he spent about 45 minutes with us taking lots of photos.  he said it was a relaxing time for DH and I before the stress of family photos and the wedding started.

what types of questions do you have about it?

MatrixDonna:  Ours was done at the place where we met one another for the first time.  It was at a wine bar.  He was even sitting in the same stool he was that day when I walked in.  🙂  I loved it!  Our wedding party was in an adjoining room, and gave us privacy for our first look.  They joined us later, where we all had a glass of wine (or two!) before the ceremony. 🙂

MatrixDonna:  thanks! And our photographer directed us as well (given our timeframe it was actually her suggestion… SO grateful to her for that!).  Her assistant was waiting for my bridesmaids and I to arrive at the park where we did our photos (just two so we were all in the same car). Photographer was with the boys, poor Chris was waiting for a wee while apparently! Bothphotographer  & assistant took photos from different angles as I walked towards DH (over bark etc, ugh my poor dress) and I tapped DH kn the shoulder and he turned around.  So awesome!

MatrixDonna:  We did a first look, and it was perfect!  I can’t imagine having NOT done a first look..

Our wedding ceremony was set in the woods, up this beautiful cobblestone path up a hill into the woods along a little waterfall. He was already set at the cermony site. I got to walk up the beautiful cobblestone path to him, place a hand on his shoulder, and he turned around and saw me.. and it was perfect. 🙂  After, we got to do a good number of the portraits.. we got through ALL of the bridal party portraits and all of my groom’s side of the family portraits… which left only my family portraits for cocktail hour. This ended up being AWESOME, because we actually had time to enjoy some of the cocktail hour!  It was perfect, and having the special moment with just us was beautiful.

I also got to cry my eyes out at THAT point, mostly in private, which helped me keep some composure walking down the aisle (I’m definitely a cryer!!! If I didn’t have the first look, ALL of the ceremony pictures would have definitely been “ugly cry-face” pictures!).

I totally recommend doing a first look! 🙂 loved ours.

MatrixDonna:  our photographer is Israeli and though he has photographer many weddings, not many were in the US.  he does a lot of corporate and government events in the US.  he was the cutest man and we adored him.

i knew about first looks from the bee and there are plenty of pictures on pinterest and other sites.

the was a beautiful courtyard in the back of our venue.  DH waited for me out there with his back to me and i came out through the automatic sliding doors.  then when i got within a few feet, he turned around and saw me.

my mom was all for this idea and she wanted me to do cutesy things with props and stuff but that wasn’t our style.  we were happy we did it and loved all of our photos from it.

We did a First Look, too, but without the photographer there (and later did a staged version for the photo op) and it was fantastic. It was the only moment we had together just the two of us the entire day. I got to see my husband’s face when he saw me for the first time without the pressure of having a photographer there to try and caputre it. He told me I looked beautiful and we had a few moments to just hold hands and grin at each other before getting thrown back into the craziness of the wedding day schedule.
