I’m being asked here on the BOARDS about formal or informal. I feel like its pretty informal myself, but then again I’m jsut so new to this I don’t know.
Taking out the dress code, your opinions please! 🙂
I’m so confused. People ask me if my wedding is formal or informal, and really I have no clue what it is! I’m going to describe some things and hope you bees can help me out with this.
Ceremony and Reception in same location – a restored Victorian.
We are being married by a friend in a non-religious ceremony.
Our wedding party is 5 maids/5 groommen.
Night wedding on a Friday.
Themed – Birds and trees.
Invites are going to have a very informal wording on them but have a traditional look.
Buffet style dinner but will have assigned seating.
Dancing after dinner.
So, is it informal or formal in your opinion?

You could split the difference and just call it semi-formal

as its cocktail dress im going with semi formal

I agree with semi formal – sounds similar to our wedding & that’s how I would have described it!

say semi formal unless you are inviting people who define formal as “the socks that they are wearing match their birkenstocks” then tell them formal. lol
(I live in eugene OR, people wear this stuff to the OPERA!)

Id also say semi formal. Since its a Friday night Id opt for formal but it really depends on the attire, the room set up and most importantly, how you view it. Cocktail attire I would say is more semi-formal than formal.
ETA – If someone said a wedding was informal to me I would think day or afternoon wedding, no assigned seating, sun dresses for girls and slacks and a shirt for guys, no timeline, not much dancing or traditional stuff

Typically, night weddings are formal or semi-formal. Ours was similar to yours, and considered semi-formal.

Ohhhh, love it. On a side note, how are you incorporating birds into the wedding? I have two on my cake…

Virginia – About the birds? Instead of a guest book, we are doing little trees as our centerpieces with small fabric birds hung on them The back of the birds have a pocket – guests will have paper and pens to write notes to us which then slide into the bird pockets. The end results is that I am going to use the slips of paper notes in a large wedding scrapbook – and then have the birds be ornaments on our first Christmas tree. 🙂 There will be feathers in the decor (ostrich) and in my bouquet as well. I may also wear a small feather hair clip in my hair during the recption.
Also, our invitations are going to say “Birds of a Feather Flock Together” and have die-cut birdies on them. 🙂

Sounds like a standard semi-formal wedding to me. There’s nothing in your description to imply that it is either casual or formal.

The bird “guest book” idea is so cute!

I vote semi-formal too. If you were attending you wedding as a guest, what would you wear? Use this to gage maybe?

Sounds quite semi-formal to me. But I also think you can just choose formal or casual. Your wedding seems like it could go either way.
