So. FH owns a mechanics garage, and works full time for the government. The garage is ran by me when I’m there and his best friend/ lead mechanic… Lead mechanics nephew also works there. A few weeks ago we hired on a man who was struggling finaciallly and he does odd end jobs and what nots.
well today lead mechanic goes in, moments later nephew storms in and said he is done and will no longer work. Local man is no where to be found, we looked at his home he is no where. We get back to the shop to find the cash box opened in its drawer and completly empty.
to say we are livid is an understatment. We need prayers for sanity and that all our employees live threw the day!

Oh goodness. Do you have security cameras where the cash box is kept? If not, you may want to invest in some for the future. Also, file a police report ASAP.

@Djacks88: This is absolutely horrible and devastating. I am SO sorry…

Prayers going up. Im so sorry you all are having a rough time, hopefully everything is cleared up and back on the straight by the end of the day.

Ouch. I hope your FH took all his information down so you can press charges. It was good that he tried to hire someone down on his luck, but as they say, no good deed goes unpunished. It’s also why bigger employers tend to run credit checks on their employees. Bad credit correlates to poor financial decisions and risky behavior, which then could lead to drastic choices to compensate, like stealing from the employer. I hope he gets it sorted out.

We have cameras! But the person was nice enough to point the camera away from the box before stealing it. We know where he lives as one of us drops and or picks him up almost every day! We’ve also brought him food, and gifts and what nots. We went by there today, all the screen doors (which are only lockable from the inside!) are locked, so we can’t even get to the door. It’s such a heart breaking mess. The computer we ordered him for Christmas showed up at our home today, which brought me to angry tears.
We are missing over $900 which is fan flipping tactic!

I’m confused. Do you think the nephew stole the money or the handy-man guy? And why is the nephew quitting? Regardless, I’ll say a little prayer for the whole group!

Well. Sad news to report. We went over to the handy mans house to write his address down for a police report (we were seconds away from his home versus 20 minutes from the shop) so went by, saw someone outside (his father) said he hadnt seen him all day. We left, went to dinner and remember hey we never got the address.. So, we go back, as we pull in another car does, it has a driver and our handy-man. Car speeds off, we follow it for about 1/2 a mile before he gets out, and the car speeds off. So, we ask him about it and get the response…
I spent it all on rocks, and smoked it all up.
we are so upset 🙁

You need to report all this to the police. Make sure that you change all the locks so that he cannot steal anything from you again. If you speak to him again make sure that you have witnesses or even tape the conversation on your mobile phone. The police, of course, may advise you not to speak to him again.
I acknowledge that all this is terribly upsetting but you may have been stung relatively lightly. He could have syphoned money away gradually leaving you to suspect everyone. This would have been much more upsetting. Or he could have stolen tools and cars leaving you much more out of pocket. Or he could have turned up at work under the influence of drugs and caused a serious accident.
You gave him and chance and you were nice to him. He through this back in your face. It is hurtful and inexplicable but you have to put it behind you.

We recorded the conversation last night. And have changed everything so that’s all ok. We are just so saddened.

The crazy thing is, my fiance and I are more so worried, and heart broken then angry. I called the handy man this morning to make sure he was alive and ok. He answered, and said he was working on getting us our money back (I’m not holding my breath there) its just so heart breaking, and before Christmas at that.
