I also had a plus sized BM. We stayed away from empire waist because it is not a chubby girls friend. We found her dress at Davids. The ones that looked the best on her were the ones that were fitted through the middle with some ruching. I thought the best way to find out what worked was to let her try on different styles and see what she liked best. I also did not have the same dress for each girl. They were each able to pick out a style that worked best for them. I don't know if that is an option for you, but it worked for me.
I have two plus sized bridesmaids, and to make everyone more comfortable, each woman is wearing a different gown in the same fabric and color. One of my bridesmaid's upper body is very disproportionate to her lower body, so she chose a dress with more coverage on the bodice to compensate and the dress looks nice on her. I would suggest David's Bridal. They have a few selections in chiffon--that's the fabric I selected as well.
I did the same as beachwedding, I'm a bridesmaid in my SIL's wedding and she is thankfully doing the same!
Could she serach for a dress that she feels comfortable with? You could let her know the color and material you'd prefer and she could search from there - less for you to do!
as a plus size girl ... it really depends on her body shape. Where does she carry her weight? If she is a pear shape and the weight is around her hips/thighs the empire could work.
I for one could not where the styles with the fitted middle and the "ruching" it drew the eye to my worst part.
I say take her shopping & try some on. David's Bridal has plenty of larger sizes in different styles.
Oh - and halters can be BAD for plus size. They dig into my neck.
I agree with Amber. Different styles can look different depending on your body shape. I used to be a size 18 so I can totally relate, I never liked halter tops because of the "digging in" as well as I felt they made my shoulders look like a linebacker.
Chiffon is definitely a good choice for fabric. Plus something your BM can wear a regular bra under is a must. It's hard enough finding a good fitting regular bra, but trying to find something to go with a halter top etc can be a nightmare (and not just for PS women).

I have 5 bridesmaids, one of which is a plus size.
She has shared with me that she truly doesn't care what she wears, with the only exception that she wears a dress wtih straps ( she has severe acne on her back).
I'm having a destination wedding, and the dress I'm choosing is chiffon, but now I'm having second thoughts that it may make her look preggers, b/c its an empire waist.
Any thoughts how to approach the subject? i saw on other posts that halter is flattering on plus size, but I can't do that b/c of the acne on her back! I saw another post that suggested asking my BM what styles would she feel comfortable in?
Thoughts, suggestions are welcome!
