David Tuterra said they are tacky in one episode, so it made me wonder, haha. I don't always agree with him but I was wondering what you guys think about the issue.
In my honest opinion without a topper, I often feel like the wedding cake isn't complete. Reminds me of a birthday cake or something..
I originally didn't want one, but my FH said he could make it. It turned out beautiful and can't wait to put it on our cake.
We are not having a cake topper per se. Instead, we are having our baker make pink roses for the top.
We used an extremely nontraditional one--a traditional Welsh love spoon, which was actually on the bottom layer of the cascading cakie.
@2dbride: I love that love spoon! My grandfather is a woodcarver, and carves a TON of love spoons. :) I'm planning to have him carve our cake topper, just as soon as I decide what I want it to look like.
I love them on many people's cakes, but they aren't for me.
We had a topper... I wasn't completely soldon the idea, either way, but DH wanted one - so we found one that represented us both, without being too "wedding".

Eh, David's taste has been a little on the questionable side lately. Have you seen some of his new dresses? I wouldn't worry about it too much. I think it's all up to a matter of opinion.
That's weird, I feel like he's used toppers before. I think if they're right for the couple, then they can make the cake more personal.
We used one. I actually thought we were going to have cupcakes so I bought cupcake toppers, but ended up with a croquembouche and the topper fit perfectly.
We are! We're using a single crystal monogram.
Our cake is going to be very simple, with a little sparkle - 2-row crystal banding around the bottom of each layer (two layers, solid light sage green), and the monogram on top. Then I'll give the baker some of our extra flowers to arrange on/around the cake to bring in our second color, orange.
I know it's silly, but it's very us. And I'm in love with our goofy topper. David Tuttera isn't the end all and be all of everything. Besides, he won't be at your wedding anyway. ;)
Here's ours from Etsy seller Garden4Arts. Our actual topper will have pink and orange decorations and a pink heart to match with our initials carved in it.

Imo, David Tutera is hella tacky himself. ;) We probably won't be using one, but that's only because we can't find one we like.
I think a topper is a sweet thing to keep as a memory keepsake and I would love to have it to share with my daughter one day. Plus, the dress was similar to my dress :o) Ours had a quote on the side that said "Now join your hands, and with your hands, your hearts--Shakespeare". I thought it was perfect and NOT tacky at all!

We did. I don't know who David Tuterra is, and I don't really care what he thinks.

We are using one! I'm very excited about it and Mr. E loves that it's a little nontraditional.
We're not having one. I find them pretty cheesy (unless its just flowers)
I'm so excited about mine! It's from lollipop workshop on Etsy and I don't have ours yet, but here is the design it's based off of :)

I agree w/ DT on a lot of things but he can kiss it on this one! I can't wait to get my topper :)
Yep. Our's really doesn't "go' with the rest of the wedding at all. But it's very us, and FI saw it in a store and picked it out. It was the first wedding related decision he made on his own (without being asked!) so it's really special to me.
To each their own, but my opinion of every cake topper I've ever seen has been fairly negative. I've never seen a likeness of a bride and groom that, to my eyes, didn't look either ridiculous or slightly creepy or both. I guess they bring up memories of childhood birthday cakes with plastic cartoon characters on them. (Those were AWESOME, by the way, just not what I wanted at my wedding). We had flowers on the top of our cake that matched those in my bouquet and in our mason jars (wine colored dahlias) and I thought it was gorgeous.
I love all these cake toppers! I'm still trying to decide, but if I were a guest, I'd get such a kick out of hearing the back story about the topper. So cool!
Ours has nothing to do with our wedding, but we are both obsessed with robots:

We're def not using a cake topper, i think a lot of cake toppers are cute but I would never put it on my wedding cake. Its a little tacky for my taste. But thats just my taste. I've made a lot of gumpaste toppers for weddings & other occasions, always cute just not for us.
I really love these toppers! Ours was a tandem bicycle. Sorry, at work, no good picture.
Swiss Miss to Bee: OMG love the topper you picked!
I was going to skip having a topper but you just made me rethink my choice!
Ultimately, I really do think the only way toppers are tacky is if you pick a tacky topper/cake.
So if you like a topper go for it! Who care what David Tuterra says! lol
Do flowers count? :P I plan to have flowers on top of a 4 tiered square cake. I saw a cute figurine but if I do buy it, it'll be on the side.
I think we'll probably skip the topper, but I'd we do get one I'd like a bicycle built for two. We bike together all the time, and FI actualy taught me to ride a bike the first summer we were dating. Now it's one of my favorite things to do.
My avatar was supposed to be our cake topper. But we've decided not to have a wedding cake, rather we are doing a dessert buffet, so we won't have a need for a cake topper.
The Mr. and I are ubber geeks and originally i wanted Link and Zelda or Mario and Peach but then we desided to go w/

b/c we're doing the staircase style cake my girl will be on one and his troll will be on the other facing each other...locked in combat lol
I love cake toppers. Its just that little extra decor that can say something about the 2 of you that others might not get.
We're doing one because I found one that looks just like a picture taken of us dancing at FSIL's wedding right after we got engaged. Both FI and I love the picture and he and I both fell for that cake topper.
