the recent post has got me curious! who has them?
EDIT: To clarify, I mean stretched ears as in the permanent body modification and process of purposefully making a piercing larger for aesthetic purposes. Some people call them "gauged" ears, while that term isn't exactly the professional name-- I'd rather not get into that argument here... though if you're curious I'm certainly willing to clarify further!
I dont :) I have three holes in my ears. The key is not wearing hoops/heavy earrings. Then again, I haven't worn earrings in YEARS so this could be the secret as well. :p
Nup.
I have had many piercings, but am not a fan of this... basically because if you change your mind it is not just a little teeny hole you can ignore.
@Future Mrs. Martin: I mean like plugs? Sometimes called "gauges"... I've never heard spacers? (Regional thing perhaps?)
@firsttimemom: I don't mean like your ears dangle after heavy earrings, I mean permanent body modification, just to clarify!
@MrsOliveBird: It should definitely be considered a permanent procedure, though I've downsized mine to appear totally like traditional earrings. I had mine to a 4g (5mm if memory serves) though took my plugs out before college graduation as I assumed I'd be entering the workforce. I didn't expect them to shrink too far, but they closed up to the point of normal post earring-- my SO couldn't believe I'd ever had stretched ears. Now that I'm in graduate school and entering the world of professional academia, I haven't decided whether I'll be stretching back up or staying traditional.
i think gauges (i know, not the correct term but i've always heard them called that) are really neat and i love the way they can look but i personally wouldnt do them - isn't it painful? a lot of kids had them growing up and remember them saying it hurt to stretch them out.
@bookworm88: Oh... they smell awful. I would never do this. Seriously, one of my best friends had theirs done in HS and no matter how often they cleaned them they smelled AWFUL.
They look so painful.... They are permanent, right? They dont go back to normal after you take them out?
@totheislnds: If you do it gradually or just a little bit, I don't think it hurts.
My FSIL recently gauged her ears (haha I just commented on Waffle's post!)... it's not a huge gaping hole, hers are very subtle. I think they look awesome, but I really love my boring ole traditional earrings, so I won't be gauging mine anytime soon. :)
Ya they are called spacers here.
My friends husband had very stretched ears but now he has to wear the spacers for the rest of his life because his earlobes are all droopy and we are almost 30 and so it's not really that appropriate anymore in my opinion (and in his wife's opinion)
@MrsOliveBird: I had mine done and they are back to completely normal now.
@firsttimemom: They must have been infected or something because mine never smelled and neither do my SO's!! That would be disgusting.
@HoneyBear: Mine did.
@firsttimemom: they certainly don't all smell awful, please don't make generalizing statements. if you don't take care of them, like any body part, they can get nasty! everyone I know takes proper care of them and they smell like clean skin!
I had mine for several years, and had them out for about 3 now. I still have 10-12g sized ears, and it doesn't seem to be going back. I still can't wear dangley earrings without them falling out...
Now, just dreading what I'll wear for the wedding. I also have 3 other lobe holes..
@MrsOliveBird: I consider it to be like a tattoo - permanent. That doesn't mean it's a mistake - anyone stretching their ears should go into it with the realization that it is a permanent procedure.
I have stretched ears - 8 gauge. They don't smell like anything but skin.
They don't hurt if you do them correctly. The idea is that you stretch them very slowly over an extended period of time-- less than a millimeter every few months. A lot of young kids I've known have gone extremely quickly, shoving different sizes into their ears and ignoring their body and assuming pain is part of the process-- it's not supposed to be. When done correctly, stretching is never even uncomfortable-- just a very slow process that results in a clean (but larger) hole. You can generally see when someone stretches too quickly when the hole is infected, wrinkled, torn, etc. (Though, in the interests of total transparency, sometimes larger holes can appear wrinkled when someone is dehydrated-- just like normal skin, earlobes can get wrinkly, pimply, etc based on other factors, not just a history of stretching.)
@JBelle7757: A tattoo is a great comparison-- and just like tattoos, there are right and wrong ways to do them. Some tattoos get infected, some look bad, etc.
Shrugs. I guess it's different for some people but my ears are 100% back to the size they were before I stretched them, and my SO's ears shrink back up from 1 inch if he takes them out for a couple of days. They definitely should not smell either, that means you're doing something wrong and not taking care of them.
I used to have 4's in highschool but took them out for a summer job as a security officer. It took my holes, literally, two days to shrink back to normal. My family must have stretchy skin because my brother had 0's and his took abut a week to go down. It's crazy how different everyone's skin is.
My ears are at a 1/2 inch right now. My FI keeps encouraging me to stretch them further. I'll probably be at an inch next year!
I like it, and they can smell if you don't clean them properly, I've seen some bad ones. But other wise they shouldn't at all.
@bookworm88: *Shrugs* Maybe they had some weird type of thing because I literally hung out with them after school every day and that's the first thing they'd do when they got home. Interesting.
@firsttimemom: yeah, stretching should definitely not be a daily thing. I waited at least three months, sometimes longer, between stretches to make sure my ears were fully healed and happy from the last one. even though it doesn't hurt, you can't keep stretching right away! the point is to make a very slight incremental change that then shifts and adjusts as more skin grows and the slightly larger hole becomes the "normal size" if that makes any sense.
I don't have mine stretched, but the majority of my friends do. I like to switch earrings and wear dangly ones too much. I do have seven ear piercings (including tragus and cartilage). It's just another form of expression in my opinion!
I have mine stretched and so does my FH and we plan on stretching more for the wedding. My mom thinks im ruining this beautiful wedding with my stretched ears and our snake bite piercings and tattoos but I dont care. We would look like 2 strangers at our own wedding if we changed it all just for whatever reason she thinks its going to "ruin" the wedding.
@bookworm88: i always thought spacers were the clear plastic things you put in so you cant see them but u dont technically have a piercing in like for work.
@firsttimemom: one of my friends in highschool was sitting in the backseat of a car, stuck his finger in his stretched ear, wiggled it around, and then stealthily wiped his finger under the drivers nose (from the back seat). We almost swerved off the road he was so disgusted. Then stuck his head out the window for fresh air.
Mine are 1/2 inch, I've had them stretched for 15 years.
Mine are usually hidden by my hair, which is how I've kept them through my professional career. I'm proud of them though (and they don't smell, because I wash).
I'll be DIYing a pair of plugs for my wedding day: sewing satin-covered buttons that match my dress through a pair of stainless tunnels.
@Bella88: This post was started because of a Bee who had commented that she thought stretched ears were gross/disgusting. I made the poll because I was sure there were some members of this community who had stretched ears. While you're entitled to your opinion, please be respectful, as you're commenting on an aesthetic choice that some of us have on our bodies.
@bookworm88: hello..i said that because she recapped a story that heppened with them in the car
other than that; i used to have friendss who had bigger wholes...
my gosh you people AMAZE ME..
@Bella88: I knew you were referring to the smelly ears story, and I agree it's equally innapropriate as having smelly armpits and smearing that on someone. Hygeine is good.
But what do you mean "you people"?
who thinks they know what the hell i said that on. when they have no clue
like herself...
I had mine all the way to a 2g before. They are now back to pretty much regular size. I missed my cute earrings too much to keep them.
@Bella88: I'm sorry, I scrolled up and assumed you were talking about the picture.
However I don't think what I said deserved your response?
Edited because I saw you live overseas so I'm going to assume English isn't your first language and just leave this one be.
