How beautiful!! There is 30 acres next to our house that we are wanting to buy. If we do, I am building a barn and getting a couple horses for sure. I love to ride!
awww, thanks for posting this! I LOVE horses. I had a pony and 3 miniature horses when I was much younger, and I'd love to have full size ones someday too. They're just so great. :)
your horse is gorgeous! I'm a little envious i've always wanted a horse! I even had riding lessons lol
Beautiful!
This is A Little Faith, aka Lily. She's a 4 year old Mustang adopted from the BLM. She was rounded up as a yearling and left in a holding pen. The first two times she was put up for auction no one wanted her. :( Since then, a friend of mine adopted her and worked with her for about two months, and then I adopted her. She is the sweetest girl, and my little amateur eventing prospect. We're focusing solely on dressage right now, but definitely at a backyard level and learning together.
I don't have any under saddle pictures yet, because it's been too cold to ride outside but I do have some cute pasture ones!
PS: Ignore the ridiculous part of her mane that she rubbed off. She's outside 24/7, and just loves sticking her head through the fence to nibble on the neighbors' grass. I can never get that one spot to grow out!

While I don't ride (anymore - that whole fall off and get right back on thing didn't work for me...), I grew up on a horse farm (specifically polo horses) and my dad is a racehorse trainer. At any given time, my parents have 14-18 horses on the farm. :)
My brother on Honest Oliver (Ollie) during a game:

My dad on Ellie while warming up:

Looks pretty!!! Are you incorporating your love for horses at your wedding?
@marywil - we are! we're having horseshoes as part of our escort cards. I'd also like to do something with horsey stamps on one of the papergoods, but haven't found a stamp I like yet.
Cait- I really want to chastise you for not wearing a helmet while taking crossrails. It only takes an instant! (Seriously, I had a patient die while she was walking her horse from the arena to the barn. It was one of the most tragic experiences of my medical career! She was neurologically devastated for about a year before she finally passed.)
I sold my last jumper (Sailor- a chestnut thoroughbred) before I started med school. I really haven't done any riding since :( Hopefully someday I'll at least get back into hunters :)
@marywil- we did. I came down to the ceremony with my dad in our friends' surrey and during the service the horses were whinnying and stomping. Everyone laughed cause it was kind of perfect for us! My ring bearer carried a horseshoe (right-side up, to keep the luck in!), and we showed the Kentucky Derby during the cocktail hour (since it was Derby Day - 05.02.09)

@ JeniRae, being from the Louisville, KY area- I love your cocktail hour idea!! AWESOME!! =)
Beautiful horses!
We just trail ride for fun.
This is me and Precious. (I did not name her; she was my FI's sister's horse, but Sister did not break her well and then she moved away, so I work with her now!) The picture is sort of washed out, and I look like hell from riding through the woods, but she looks good. Her winter coat is near black, though. Also, as you can see, my reins are pink, which pleases me.

And here is my FI on his horse, Harold. They are actually half brother and sister, but Harold looks more like his father, which is a buckskin, whereas she looks like her mother. I forget what else Precious is. Harold could be registered; she could not be.

Incidentally, these pictures were taken on the hill where we plan to get married. :)
Great idea for a thread! I used to spend my free time or horse message boards, and now I'm all about the wedding boards, so this is perfect :)
I don't have my own horse, but currently half-lease a gorgeous Thoroughbred mare. We practice dressage and enjoy riding the trails with our buddies at the barn!
I wasn't able to incorporate horses into our wedding (we're going to Vegas, woohoo!), but I really want to do a Trash-the-Dress session on my mare, galloping through the fields!
@amaryllis... what part of PA is that? those rolling hills just remind me of my neck 'o the woods :)
@Lilyfaith - What a cutie! And you should have seen Stella's tail a couple years ago it made Lily's mane look perfect! It was terrible and is just now growing out.
@JeniRae - Polo is so fun! I've only tried it once but it was a blast! Polo ponies are incredible!
@ marywil - I didn't manage to incorporate them (very surprisingly) unless you count the fact that I got ready in their old pen. :-) Like Noelle though, if I ever do a Trash the Dress session it will definitely be on horseback!
@DG - I agree that helmets are definitely preferable though I admit I don't wear one all the time (obviously), even when I'm planning on riding. To me, even just being around horses period is a calculated risk. Like you said, it can happen in an instant at any time.
I'm sorry you haven't gotten to ride for awhile but I suppose the lil Lemon would have put a kink in that anyways. :-)
Oh my goodness I want to hug them all! I haven't ridden in so long and I miss it so much!
Me Too!!!
I had horses all my life. We usually had American Quarter Horses. Sadly I don't ride often. My mom has horses, but after my parent's divorced, my dad sold his and eventually moved to a city. He has one now, which I ride occasionally at the stable he boards at. I miss it like crazy. I'm secretly hopeful I can convince my FFIL to let me get a horse and keep it on their huge dairy farm somewhere.
This is me (in front) on my mom's horse, Golden Belle.

This is me on our family's horse "Bug".

The first horse of my own, Ferdin. We are at a horse camp through 4H.

And finally, my second horse of my own, Quincy, aka Amber's Counter Quincy. She was born and raised on our farm. We're at an AQHA show in this pic.

Awww! How awesome! Some really good pics on here ladies! Although I dont have any horses myself right now, I spend my weekend volunteering at a Ranch for resques! I love them all, and love spoiling the crap out of them, just made them easter cookies that were a hit! LOL
I love them all, and hope to see them one day find good homes, not all are able to be riden, so it makes them hard to adopt out, plus with hard times now! But what can you do! They have already been given a second chance and have good lives right! so yeah, thats my input for now! LOL
I always have issues uploading pics, but you can find them all on petfinder, under Whidbey Island Resque Equines
I went for an amazing ride yesterday. It was relatively short but it was a lot of fun. There's a creek just north of our house that was almost belly deep on Stella and she went through without blinking. (Ok, so that doesn't sound so impressive until you realize she was born during a drought and refused to go near water unless it came out of a hose. I once fought her for 2 hours to try and get her to cross a dry ditch because she knew that once upon a time there used to be water!) Anyways, after that we kept heading north and found the perfect stretch to run on. It's next to a road that gets practically no traffic, it's lower down so there's a nice little track to help keep them going straight with soft dirt, no rocks or ditches and the grass is mowed short. She's not the fastest horse by any means but she found a new gear and I actually had tears from the wind! It was amazing.
Anyways, sorry to those girls who can't get out and ride much. I don't mean to make you jealous! I just had to relive it. :-)
Oh, and I snagged a couple pictures while I was out. Oh, and she would want me to tell you that while she does have a thick ol' neck it usually looks much more refined than it does here. ;-)

Yay ponies! This is my lovely horse... She's a thoroughbred, only about 15.2 and 7 years old. She's been a great university horse for me - I haven't had the time or money to compete so we've just been hacking and schooling since I got her as a 4 yo :)
She's nothing special (wouldn't be worth much) to anyone else but we just click - I love her more than any of my previous horses, she's just so cool.
AND, now that I'm done with the wedding and am working full time... maybe we can do a bit more together! DH sold his flash motorbike so we can buy a truck to tow the horse float (horse trailer)... his idea, too! He's so lovely. He's ridden her a few times and they get on pretty well too :)
The last photo is what I want to get back to! That was a few years ago now and two horses ago...
Great thread!
@caitlan - so much fun! We don't have easily accessed trails around here, so Lily's never been on one! I assume it won't be that big of a deal for her, though, she's not a spooky horse. And well, she was wild! You'd never know it with the way she hates mud, though.
I love Stella, she's gorgeous.
I'm NOT a horse girl...kinda afraid, I'll admit it! But my mother LOVES horses and she would love the eye-candy (ponie-candy!) of this thread!!!
but I am getting married on Mackinac Island where there are NO cars so we will be having a horse and carriage and I can't wait for that :)
I love Macinac Island! I was trying to convince my guy that it was an excellent honeymoon spot- he wanted beaches but we compromised with the promise of a trail ride.
Agh, I wish I could ride doing the school year but the coach for the school's team is crazy and the riding association only has adult size western saddles (all of them have to wide of seats and too long of stirrups and they didn't take kindly to me going without stirrups)
Meet Reese's PB Cup, a 9-ish year old QHxWelsh mare. She kind of has the committee look. Her first owner out grew her and a former coworker of my dad's bought her. I worked with her for two summers to try and tune her back up. Thankfully she is now a lesson pony and doing very well. I think her long back would work well with sidesaddle.
And there's my "trainer's hunch" and my last instructor called it. I developed a slight lean and braced feet from a previous barn when I always was put on the geenies and those that didn't have breaks (I thought it was fun until the same pony laid me out twice, second time sending me to the ER.)

Ok, we've had the puppies and kitties threads, even exotics but not our horses yet?! How did that happen? I know there are more than a few horse lovers and owners here so let's see them!
This is my Stella (registered name: Captain's Stella Luna. What can I say? I was 16 when I named her and she has a crescent moon instead of a star.) When I was a horse crazy 8 year old I started saving my pennies so that I could buy a horse. When I was 12 my parents gave in and I bought Mel. Then for some crazy reason my parents let me breed her a few years later (again, what can I say? I was 16.) Unfortunately I had to put Mel down a few years ago but I still have her daughter. She's an almost-nine year old Morgan mare (who despite being registered does not look all that Morgan-y. I get a lot of "she looks like a Quarter Horse except for her head." I figure she must just be a throw back to the old days. And I'm pretty sure she will always look like a baby with that face of hers. Seriously, her face looks like a 2 year olds. The baby fuzz forelock doesn't help matters any either. :-)
I don't have the best pictures on this computer but here are a couple. And please ignore the fact that my heels are sky high and I'm wearing tennis shoes. I wasn't planning on riding that day but mom had a new camera she wanted to play with. :-)
