A self-proclaimed formal wear hater, FI grudgingly bought himself a suit for our wedding (which he looks A-MAZ-ING in, btw). Yesterday I told him the unhappy (to him at least) news that he has to bring it on our honeymoon cruise, because there will be 4 formal nights and I’ll be damned if I’m going to spend them all hiding away in our suite eating room service just so he doesn’t have to wear a jacket to dinner. After feigning offense/threatening to jump off the boat/threatening to wear a suit jacket with pj pants, he admitted defeat. The suit is Caribbean bound…just as soon as that whole wedding thing is out of the way 😉
Anybody else with a FI who is allergic to suits, button-down shirts, long sleeves, more than one pair of shoes, and ties? Does he indulge you and suffer them anyway?

I’m SO happy you posted this! I had a 2 week long fight with my FI about why he had to wear either a vest or a tie, and that a suite jacket and pants was not formal enough for the groom. My FI is a t-shirt and jeans guy, and I’m a girl who loves to dress up, but also spends sundays in sweat pants. Generally, he will dress up for the occassion (i.e. a funeral, a wedding, and a nice dinner). he realizes things are expected of him. And since I won the tie/vest argument for the wedding I guess to answer your question, he indulges me, but VERY grudgingly. I always pull the it will make me VERY happy and I can’t imagine it any other way. Also, I find that when he realizes I think he looks good, he’s more willing to listen to me.
Either way, I’m happy to know I”m not the only one with this problem

@AmberAustin: Yeah, I think it definitely helps if you keep telling him how great he looks when he’s all dressed up. FI rolls his eyes and makes snarky comments when I do, but I can tell by his face that he’s thinking it over, going, “Maybe I do look good in this uncomfortable stuff…”
And I think he enjoys how shocked our friends are whenever they see him in a nice shirt and tie, lol.

We cruised for our honeymoon too 🙂
You probably don’t want to tell your FI this, but they weren’t very strict at enforcing the formal wear on our cruise (Royal Caribbean). One guy at our table wore a button down shirt and khakis, and we actually showed up in shorts, because our luggage got lost. No one minded or commented. 🙂

@ddw: Yeah, I suspect we won’t get kicked out of the dining room if he doesn’t wear a jacket, but it’s our honeymoon and I do want at least one night where we go out in all our finery looking like a million bucks. ‘Cause lord knows that suit is getting shoved in the back of the closet at lightning speed when we get home.

It was five years before I ever saw my FI in a suit.
Last time I went to visit, he wore one just to pick me up at the airport because he thought I’d like it.
Men can change after all!!

my fi is definitely on this list! He swears he is going to show up to the wedding in his favorite hiking boots (ugh!) I think maybe I’ve finally convinced him that it wouldn’t be appropriate but who knows!!

My FI is allergic to anything that isn’t stained and/or doesn’t have holes in it! I’ve known this man since I was 15, and our wedding day will be the first time I will ever seen him in a suit.
