Just a fun little question...Do you say "pop" or "soda"? FI (from Chigaco) says pop and I (from east PA) say "soda". We both refuse to budge. What do you say? Where are you from?
Soda, I grew up in Long Island/Florida. I think people in Texas call all soda "Coke".
HA... I love this thread idea! Half of my fam says "pop" and it drives me nuts because I grew up with "soda."
FI moved to Ohio over the summer and a lot of people say "pop," but he knows several people who refer to everything as "Coke." You could ask for a Sprite and they'll say "oh yeah, I'll get you a Coke!" which, for obvious reasons, can be very confusing! lol
Upstate, NY here and we say soda. I remember being younger and someone offered me a "pop". When they came back with a SODA I was totally bummed because I thought I was getting one of those frozen fruit pop things.
I used to say pop because it's how I was raised (I was born in Michigan and that's where my parents are from). But my fiance and everyone I know is southern (I mean, I'm in South Carolina and have been since I was 4) so I now say soda more often with pop just slipping out every once in a while.
@LGenz: I've come across a lot of people in South Carolina who call all soda "Coke". It confused me the first time someone asked their parents for a coke and got a Dr. Pepper.
I'm from St. Louis and say soda! Though I like the term "carbonated refreashment." I might have to start using that.
@ILuvDance17: lol @ "carbonated refreshment" -- I'm loving that!
@mandb122: How do their parents know?! The "Coke" thing has always confounded me.
i say "soda". but almost everyone in georgia says "Coke", regardless of what brand they are talking about. drives me nuts! lol!
I voted for soda, but in college, WVU ... they said pop and my cousins in FL say pop
I'm in Virginia and it's soda all the way here. Although very rarely you may hear someone refer to any soda as a "coke," like some of the other southern bees said.
I say soda. It drives me nuts when people say pop. lol, I don't know where I picked up "soda". I lived in Baltimore for a short while as a youngin' and then in the good ol' Midwest where everyone says pop...
In Oklahoma you hear a mix of Coke and pop. I tend to just say the brand name of whatever I'm talking about. If not, then I go with pop.
im an aussie and i say soft drink or fizzy drink
and when you guys say 7up/sprite we say lemonade
@eloping: Wait, you call lemon lime soda lemonade? Interesting! So would you also say lemonade for actual lemonade?
In Texas, it's all "Coke". And then someone asks you what kind of "Coke" and you say "Sprite" or "Dr. Pepper" or whatever :-). I also say soda sometimes. But I pretty much remain true to my Texas roots and call carbonated sodas cokes.
I say "drank" when with family. (code switching and all,LOL) but with others, I say coke. I'm in Georgia.
I first heard pop when I was up north for the first time when I was little. I was SO confused. I had to ask what a "pop" was.LOL
Growing up in the midwest I definitely always said pop. One of my friends who moved up from the south called everything Coke, which I thought was weird since even Sprite or root beer was called Coke. Since moving to the East Coast though I've started saying soda after people laughed at me for saying pop.
@LGenz: Not only do their parents know, but I've seen it happen in restaurants. It actually makes me wary sometimes when they say "Here's your coke" and I ordered a Dr. Pepper. I have no idea how they know what the actual meaning of coke is since there are multiple options but they seem to.
I was born in Iowa, "pop", and remember when I was little wondering why people said "soda". But I was converted by the time I was 5 or 6. If I said "pop" in CA I'd be laughed at!
It would be cool if the poll could be a map so we could literally see the regional differences!
I grew up in Texas, so everyone calls it Coke--you just specify it later. But my parents are from Michigan, so they always said Pop. So naturally, I always said Pop. And it was always so funny because whenever I said Pop in the south people would be a little confused as to what I was talking about. Although people up north thought that calling soda Coke was ridiculous lol.
I've found regional language maps before, I'm going to dig around. I know shopping cart v wagon is regional as well.
@LGenz: My fiance and his family call them buggies instead of carts. I also said cart corral one day and he didn't know what I was talking about.
I found a map (totally unscientific, I'm sure) with the Pop vs Soda vs Coke (sorry international bees - it is mostly a US map). I had forgotten that southerners just say "Coke" but I have heard that in my travels, too. This is great bees! Keep voting!
The map is from http://popvssoda.com:2998/
@LGenz: I always find it amusing when I hear buggy about shopping carts, especially since store signs say carts! But I've actually heard it a little more here in South Florida than I did in OK.
That map is awesome, great find!
I'm from Kansas (now live in Missouri, but only by a couple miles), we say "pop".
everyone in indiana says pop... except me! i say soda haha! my grandpa is from the south though and he does call it coke... so funny!
I grew up in MI and everyone said "pop", but my parents were from PA and referred to it as "soda", so that's what I grew up calling it.
Now I live in PA again and we all say "soda" out here.
I'm Canadian and everyone I know, myself included, says "pop." My parents are/were Americans (WI) and used to say "soda," but they've been converted. Haha~
