Go to Google and type in Crime Stats Portland Oregon.  There you can put in your address and get a good idea of the area and the crime and the safety.  Personally, I would never live in that area, but I am a SW Portland girl and have been my whole life.

SE Portland was a very rough place when I was growing up, but they are working very hard to change that.  Some of the neighborhoods are great (Brooklyn, Hawthorne, Alberta, etc) but some have still not reached that level yet.

Where will you be attending med school?  OHSU?  If that is the case you might want to look in SW.  The commute will be easier and in general it has better neighborhoods, but the prices are more.

SE is still pretty rough in most parts, and expensive in the parts that it’s not. You really should consider going to the north side and just making a commute. There has been so much crime in SE the past few years that it’s terrifying to even go there. My fiance haven’t even been to a few of our favorite stores and restaurants down there because of everything going on.

I lived in SE for 4 years – Inner SE is nice, I never felt unsafe in outer SE but wouldn’t want to live there.

That is the college of natural medicine and not too far from where I work, which is in the heart of downtown.  I live out in Beaverton and commute by MAX everyday and love it.  I would not commute to work any other way and deal with the traffic and the parking…no thank you.  I suggest you look around a little more and see what you can find.  You may not want to deal with rent, but it might be a good option until you get to know the area like the back of your hand and figure out what parts of town you do feel safe it…it really is one of those personal things that you only know when you have been here awhile.

I TOTALLY forgot about Beaverton/Aloha/Hillsboro. I was born out there and know lots of people who do the Max commute, definitely check into that option. 🙂

Outer basically means the larger the street number, further away from downtown.  The lower the street number the more expensive rent will be because you get closer to downtown. The city can basically be split up into four sections, divided by the Willamette River and Burnside street, it makes more sense if you are looking at a map because I don’t explain it all that well, even though I’ve lived here my whole life, lol!

There is a ton of new development happening in Beaverton, one if which is called 45 Central, and its a neighborhood of townhouses right across from Nike and it’s close to the MAX which will take you downtown, about a 25 minuted ride.
