Ok, so my boyfriend and I are just 20 years old, and I am graduating university this week, so I don’t plan on being a big spender during my engagement/wedding planning, as we are broke (or so I thought). I even told my boyfriend not to bother with a diamond and to do the colored gemstone/moissanite route instead to save money.
Sooo, yesterday my BF starts talkig about plane tickets to Europe. Then when we go downstairs, he has his computer open to hotels and flights to Italy(also ones to the Carribean). He was looking at $300 a night hotel rooms on the Amalfi Coast, and IDK where on earth he’d have that kind of money. He was serious about wanting to go somewhere in about 2 weeks, but I reminded him we need passports.
Is this just me or oes this seem weird? Maybe he is going to propose?!!!! But even then, I thought buying a ring would be a financial struggle and now I see him looking a expensive vacations?

It is probably just wishful thinking and dreaming (on his part). Unless he’s got a trust fund he’s starting to withdraw from in 2 weeks, it does seem unlikely a 20 year old would have the money to fly to Europe, travel all over, and stay in $300 a night hotel rooms to propose.

You know him best (financially) and I agree with PP. It does seem weird that he would have that kind of money and you think that you all are ‘broke’. I would definitely make an inquiry to him about it. Just to see how serious he is about it, how he plans on paying for it, etc. And for me I would be very upset if my SO was looking for expensive trips etc and couldn’t/wouldn’t/hasn’t purchased me an engagement ring first. It’s kind of catch 22 though because he MAY just be looking at booking this trip and already has the ring to propose. I guess in that instance I don’t know. It’s very hard as a waiting bee to be patient and go along with a trip knowing that money is needed for an engagement/wedding, etc. It’s hard to be excited and happy in that situation. I would definitely have a little talk with him. Yet don’t try and pry too much.

The only thing that I could think of, is that he was supposed to sell some VERY high priced items for a good commission. When I asked him how that was going, he said that nothing sold. But maybe they did and he didn’t tell me so that I wouldn’t be expecting anything.
IDK, waiting is soooo difficult! Everytime he says ‘meet me here’ or does anything out of the ordinary I am like “IS THIS THE DAY???”

Well, if you really want to see how serious he is, tell him you both need to get passports NOW to have them for a trip in 2 weeks. The State Department needs a minimum of one week turnaround for expedited passports, and that is about a $200 cost per passport with passport fees, expediting fees, and overnight mailing fees. Tell him you will both need to get started working on those and if he hesitates, that’ll give you a pretty good answer as to how serious he is about this trip.

Could he have gotten you a passport already?
I got my FI a suprise passport. I cropped a photo I took of him for his passport photo and applied for it on my own.
