We originally wanted a band for our reception, but we don't have a huge budget and didn't realize at first just how expensive most bands are. Does anyone know of a good (experienced) wedding band in the NY area that charges less than $4000, or should I stop wasting my time and just start looking at DJs?
Absolutely depends on what kind of music you want and how long you want it for. I started with gigmasters.com. We found a Bluegrass band that is coming into upstate NY from NH (four hour drive.) They will play for 4 hrs for under $2000. They have done weddings in the past.
We just signed with The A Band www.theaband.com and they have been great so far. We got a fantastic deal and they are definitely in your price range. Our wedding isn't for another couple of weeks, but I was impressed with their videos and they look like they'll have a lot of fun with the wedding.
We were also really stressed with the price of bands, so we were thrilled when we found The A Band.

Thanks in advance for any advice!
