I was talking with one of my mom friends today and she told me about some SIDS risk information that she had found out and I thought I would share with you ladies:
Apparently there was research done in New Zealand which believes that the chemicals in baby crib mattresses (that reduce flammability) are giving off toxic nerve gases that cause SIDS. This supposedly is remedied by purchasing these mattress covers that have had 100% effectiveness in eliminating SIDS related death cases in New Zealand ( 100% effectiveness for those people who chose to use these special covers – not New Zealand as a whole.)
There is a lot of information on it if you just google search “New Zealand crib mattress cover.” I don’t mean to be totally alarmist, but it may be something worth considering and reading up about.
I also saw that there are crib mattress you can purchase that are described as being organic and do not contain these chemicals – if you want to go the extra mile for peace of mind.

I just googled it and it def does seem to have merit. It also fits with another method that has reduced SIDS occurrences by 70%; having a fan in the room. The theory was that babies die of SIDS bc they breathe in a pocket of stagnant air and maybe the CO2 is too much for them and stops their breathing. Perhaps they aren’t breathing in stagnant air at all. Maybe they were breeathing in gases from their mattresses. It would make sense that fans would reduce SIDS bc they circulate the air which in turn reduces the fumes by dispersing the concentration of fumes coming from the mattress.

They also say that on top of this mattress cover you should have a fitted sheet that is 100% cotton. If you want to have some kind of waterproof padding inbetween the mattress cover and the fitted sheet, that should also be 100% cotton. (For example a 100% cotton flannel mattress pad.)
@bunnyharriet: I thought it sounded like it had a lot of merit too! I will definitely be looking into purchasing one of these mattess covers for both our crib and pack n play. I figure the peace of mind that I will get from a $35-$40 purchase is totally worth it in and of itself.
SIDS is so effin’ scary.

I’ve never heard of this type but we are planning on buying an organic mattress pad. Very interesting though!

Interesting. Definitely seems worth a try for around $30. I just added a mattress cover to my registry.

@iheartnerds: just make sure the mattress cover you registered for is one of the special ones & not a regular mattress pad cover. They are kinda like a large plastic bag/wrap for your mattress. The brand that was recommended to me by my friend was called “babesafe” but I’m sure there are several versions of this out there.

You know the mattresses really do have a strong smell. My girlfriend and I did a smell test in the store and ended up getting ones that didn’t smell as bad. We used the bassinet the first 2 months and now he’s in the pack n play. Now this makes me re-think moving him to his crib just yet. Need to look at the mattress cover I have.
