At my wedding we exited the church after the ceremony, had our receiving line as the guests came out of the church, then we went back in for pictures. We didn't have a big departure, but I would imagine that the guests could mill around outside waiting for you after your pictures.
Alternatively, you could walk back down the aisle but not exit the church, allow all your guests to gather outside and have a grand exit. Then hustle over to your reception venue and do the recieving line there before/during the cocktail hour.

I love all the pictures where people exit the church and all the guests are blowing bubbles at the newly married couple. Can anyone tell me how they did or plan to do that and a receiving line? And where do you go while you wait for your guests to all gather outside the door/ how long does that take?
