I found that I really coveted blingy vintage/antique style rings before ring shopping and ended up with a classic solitaire! Funny how when those beautiful rings were on my finger I just didn't like them on me! (i still drool over them though)
first pic - what I loved before ring shopping
next pics - my lovely e-ring!
both pictures are gorgeous!! i can't wait to post in this thread because i have no idea what i'll be getting lol!
Good post Tropicalbarbi! I kind of did the opposite switch of you.
Before I was really seriously considering an ering I thought I wanted something like the Tiffany Novo:

But once my FI was seriously asking me what I wanted and I started looking, I realized that I wanted an antique, vintage, estate piece. What I have now is like nothing I've seen before or since and I absolutely love it.
Here's my ering:
I have a 3 stone ring in a pave band. I thought it would be round cut, it was princess cut :)
I wanted one just like this, but with princess instead of round side stones and I thought I wanted a radiant center, but he got me a cushion which i love much much more. And mine is definitely bigger than this Jeff Cooper (which is platinum and I wanted gold so I could have more diamonds!!). Pretty close! I was totally open to other looks but this one was my fave
Well I don't have a ring yet but I wanna play too! I'll post what I was SURE I wanted when I was in undergrad: a 1/2 ct princess cut 3 stone or solitaire with accent stones and a plain band. Next up what I covet now: a 1 ct cushion cut solitaire on a pave band! Funny because now the two things I do NOT want are princess cut and 3 stone!
I wanted a sapphire and ended up with a diamond.
The sapphires in our price range looked small on my hand. We went to see my best friends dad who is a jeweller, and we ended up getting a much bigger, better quality of diamond than we could of sapphire.
I wanted something like below, and got it copied with the diamond in the centre and sapphires at the side.

My actual ring-

I had always said I wanted a princess cut diamond...that was really the only thing I was really set on. I saw this one when we were out looking one day and I LOVED it!
The one my fiance ended up getting me is a little different than what I wanted, but he picked it out and he really liked it...and I love it!
I'm not really sure what I wanted in an engagement ring. I would see pictures of tacoris in magazines and loved those, but for whatever reason I looked at wedding dresses I might like instead of engagement rings :p I will say though, that I didn't think I would end up with a round solitaire. I used to hate those! I like simple, but they just seemed kinda boring and I don't like round cut diamonds. However, that's exactly what I got and I LOVE IT! I wouldn't trade it for anything!
What I wanted and what I got were almost identical (we had the ring custom made with the Ritani pic in mind though)
OHH! I love this thread! I'll have to post pictures in 2 hours when I'm done working here! :) Mine are completely different!
When I started out, I wanted the Tiffany Novo. My sneaky man sent me on shopping trips wiht my sister (totally unknown that these trips were for me!) so he got me exactly what I wanted!
I thought I wanted this:
Kind of perfect, right? But the ring he gave me is a beautiful round solitare, and I LOVE it because I know how much time he spent learning about the 4 cs, researching diamonds, and picking out my stone. I love looking at my ring and imagining what he must have been thinking/feeling during that process.
so I always "knew" that I wanted something different and contemporary - and never a round stone.. I had always been drawn to the tension setting rings...
FI surprised me with my ring and I love it! It's nothing like I thought I would love, but on my finger, it's perfect! I could never want anything else!
FIRST- what i thought i wanted
SECOND - what i got :)
The one that I originally wanted before graduating college was a tiffany's lucida ring...then i fell in love with the vintage ritani....I ended up picking out a vintage ritani look alike custom make but interestingly picked a asscher stone for the center...the princess cut was just not a clean enough look for me....Hopefully I can post you a pic of the actually ring in the next couple of weeks
We actually had the first one picked out together....at the time it was the one I thought I wanted (out of the options I had) and I was happy to get it. (Un) Fortunately about two months after purchasing it my FI made a blatant point to bring it back because it ruined the element of surprise (not to mention my nagging about when I would get it) I was heartbroken at the time because I thought he had other intentions when he brought it back (like he didn't want to marry me anymore)

Not too soon after I was surprised and blown away by this baby!!! I was so shocked I asked if he was joking. He felt pretty proud of himself because he got to pick all on his own and without me knowing one bit. I am much more pleased with the ring he got me I love that it has the solitaire center with all the accent diamonds.

Here's what I wanted...something like this:

Princess cut...possibly 3 stones.
and this is what I got:

marquis cut...completely different. Wasn't exactly excited when I saw it lol. That's what happens when he picks it out by himself! :) It's a pain to find any kind of wedding band!
This is what I wanted:

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12px;">and this is what I got:
LOL. I love it. It's my dream ring, when I put it on it took my breath away!!
I wanted a solitaire, but I ended up with a 3-stone and I LOVE it!
No pictures, but I have descriptions! : )
I didn't dream of my e-ring too much, but I really liked the idea of a shape (like, for instance, my ultimate fave, a butterfly: picture it, two larger stones and then two smaller ones under those...obviously not too large 'cause I'm not a big fan of in-your-face bling, but maybe about 1/3 carat for the larger stones and 1/5 to 1/4 carat for the smaller ones). I knew I wanted a white gold/silver/platinum setting, and round stones.
The ring I have is in my picture...it's three 1/3 carat stones in a row, held in place by one white gold band that splits in the middle. : ) Absolutely gorgeous -- my fiance has fabu taste in jewellery!
Mine weren't the same. I knew that I wanted the cushion cut, but I thought I was going to get one with the halo around it. I ended up getting the same pave setting band with a cushion solitaire. Very beautiful. At first I thought I liked the halo one better, but I think my ring is classic and will never 'go out of style'.
Hey Ladies! I sent my fiance a couple of pictures of rings that I liked. All were either emerald cut or cushion cut with a halo. The first picture was my favorite that I sent him, and the second is the ring I got. He wanted to put his own spin on it, and I actually love what he got me!
The ring I wanted was a tacori with sapphires in it.. and absolutely nothing like the ring I got.. but I do love the ring I have.
My fiance had my first ring custom made, it was more or less like the pictures I had given him. I wanted a halo setting but one that sat very high on my finger.....2 months after we were engaged I took the ring back due to issues with the metal in my setting, very long and sad story he ended up getting all the money back. I had to seek out a new diamond broker and start all over. Ring number 2 was even bigger and better and I love it even more then the first!!!!!
We went pretend engagement ring shopping and I told him that I wanted the eye shape ring (Marquis).
Well when he proposed, there were two rings in the box. I GOT TO CHOOSE!! There was the marquis and the tear drop one. When we went pretend shopping, we didn't see a tear dropped one.
I ended up choosing the tear drop one. By the way, after I said yes. I asked him if there was a return policy for the other ring. lol
@yrett: so cute that he gave you the choice!! the pear shape is what i chose for my mom!
I love this thread! I thought I wanted this ring the first time we went ring shopping:
Oops, didn't include the gorgeous ring I actually got! I ended up with this one and I LOVE it:
I've been engaged three months and I still drool over all these rings. Looooove those diamonds!
The first is the ring I thought I'd have -- the Maevona Westray, but in WG (first pic)
The ring I got was a solitaire from Brian Gavin, which is a million times better, *AND* has a hidden amethyst inside the band
Top is the one I wanted and still want.. I'll get it eventually I think... Change it up a few years later, is it hard to melt it down and change? Anyone else done this?
Bottom is what I got and like, kinda :)
I ended up with the ring I wanted... A six prong round solitaire! It was like WAYYY bigger than I deserve... hehe :) I love my FI!
yay! I finally get to post here! :) The ring I was hoping for was the tiffany novo-- except I didn't want an ACTUAL novo bc I am a practical girl and I just couldn't stomach the cost. The ring I got is below.... it is awesome! A cushion cut solitaire in a platinum pave band. the only difference really is that there is a little more metal on either side of the pave diamonds on my ring vs. the novo. I do like the delicate look of the novo, but I really love how my ring feels so substantial. I was most worried about having a thicker band that it would look funny on my hand, but I think it looks superb!!
Had no idea what I wanted!!! And diamonds are girls best friend, I guess not mine lol
This is what he picked out and I love it.....
